Thanks, TDR Staff
Getting caught up in the Assault rifle hoopla, I somewhat panicked and purchased an Colt AR-15 for $2000. My justification was seeing them going for $2500 to $3000 on Gunbroker. I have always wanted a AR & kept putting it off and now I paid dearly! I know the Colts used to go for $1000-$1200. Given this set of circumstances of these troubling times, how bad did I screw up?

Well the situation has changed within the last couple weeks and even days. I picked up a colt LE6920 at Walmart about 6 weeks ago for $1050. 00. I waited to buy additional magazines, wallyworld doesnt sell them and didnt get around to it and now I cant find any to save my life. Same with ammo cant find any. I at least have some as I have a mini14 but would like to get my hands on another 1-2000 rounds. Prices on some ammo are going through the roof as well 5. 56 being one them. Cant find bullets to reload with either except like 40 grain varmit loads which arent going to work to well out of the 1:7 twist of the colt. Also thought it might be nice to have a spare bolt carrier group and again every one is out. Daniel defenses website says that when they do get them in they sell out within minutes. After about a week so far none of the websites that "will contact when available" have contacted me yet. There was a local gun show this past weekend a smaller one but nonetheless there was only one company that had ammo for sale and there was a line halfway across the building. I saw several people wheel a two wheeler out loaded up to the top with ammo. I was there at 9am when they opened and by the time I got in, waited in line for ammo they were out, at least of the 5. 56 I was wanting. The two people in front of me both bought over $1000 worth of ammo. While I am confident that something will happen with gun control am unsure of how far they will go. So whether you got perhaps taken advantage of will remain to be seen.

I say if you wanted it, and could afford it, you didn't screw up at all. I haven't seen them for under $3,000 here in southeast, Michigan since the Newtown shootings, so perhaps you got a deal?

Trouble now is finding . 223 ammo, I've watched that double in price as well.

I think they call this HINDSIGHT & FORESIGHT. BarryG, that is the exact model i bought! $1050 was a pretty good price! Last one in Akron,OH. Got 200 rds with it at $40/100. Time will tell! Got no one to blame for procrastinating but my self, wouldn't be the first I paid for my mistakes haha!
What do you guys think of the Colt AR?

Seemore look at it this way, if you were wrong, will that extra $8-1000 make or break you? Didn't think so... :)

I am in the same boat (sort of, read my post about the M1A). Things have changed in the last month. I too believe that something will change now, especially with the two firemen being killed this morning. I think the best case scenario is that they will re-instate the assault weapons ban, which would be a token change that the public could live with, and that would allow us gun owners to breathe a sigh of relief. Worst case though is some sort of legal definition of an assault weapon with an associated tax stamp put in place like the gov't did for automatic weapons, (What I would do if I were an anti-gunner and king for the day); or some sort of similar taxation with ammunition, although this would be harder.

My concern is that once you get into the larger calibers, they are a little more expensive to feed. In addition, any time I acquire a weapon, I usually try and put at least 500 rounds through it to get as good a feel for it before I depend upon it. That may get expensive now as I do not have a . 308 currently in my house.

In the end, I think you did fine.

As a side note, if you are not caught up on your NRA/GOA dues, do so as they will need it in the coming months...

:{ Last Wednesday stopped by one of the nearby gunstores. It was packed with folks. They had 2 AR 15 Colt 6920's available for $1299 each. Unfortunately, I passed on the opportunity since we're just starting a kitchen remodeling. Those Colts sold that afternoon. Silly me for being so frugal. I'm the proverbial "day late - dollar short "guy. :{

On a side note, another store just received several custom Wilson Combat AR's SPR's in somewhat odd calibers, (. 300 Blackout and 7. 62 X 40 WT Wilson Tactical). Checking the manufacturer's site it looks these were originally listing for around $2300 to $2500. I think the salesman said he wanted $3500 or so for these. Would these custom AR's be worth more in the long run or is this just pure fantasy? Where in the heck would you get the ammo for these odd calibers?

The guy at the store said his ammo supplier told him assault rifle ammo most all calibers was about a 3 year backorder now. Is it that bad already?

I got off gunbroker earlier and the prices are stupid right now!!! I have not seen it like this before... .

Someone else might weigh in to the contrary, but don't pay that kind of money for an off caliber. You won't be able to get a sustainable supply of ammo for it. In addition, look in local gun rags for stuff. Cash is king and you could probably still purchase two AR's for that kind of money.

Time for a deep breath right now... It either will return to normal or think of buying a Ruger or Savage in there new bolt/clip fed variant.

Flying_gage,

Don't worry, that's the same thought I had. I"d never be able to justify something like that unless I was a big lottery winner. Haha. :-laf

Seemore..... The only way you screw up buying a gun is if you can't afford it. I have made many good deals on guns in the past, I have also overpaid. The ones that I overpaid for are usually the ones I wanted ( or as my son use to say " needed " ) If you can afford it then you did'nt over pay... . Guns are not going to get any cheeper... .

WORST case scenario, you have to keep it to keep from losing money on it... . Gee, that sucks. :-laf As for ammo, I'm gonna say roll-yer-own. It's not gonna get cheaper or be available for another 3-4 months, depending on what happens.

And certainly don't pay insane money for an off caliber. A 300AAC/Blackout caliber is not very useful over 200 yards with the 220gr subsonic bullet. It's designed to be subsonic for suppression, so unless you take up urban sniping, it's not going to do you much good... . The 125gr loading is a bit better, distance wise, but wind drift is a bummer, and they're pretty easily stopped by foriegn objects at any kind of range. The only benefit would be you could buy a new upper for it down the road in a few months once the craze lets up some..... The 7. 62x40 Wilson is basically the same. Both use the . 223 cartridge for a parent cartridge. The only viable ammo readily available is pretty expensive, unless you load your own. Then the cost of components is going to be pretty high... .

I'm soooo glad I finished up 4 builds about a month ago. :D

Me too. Too bad I sold or traded them all. :{ Got lots of parts on backorder Wednesday after Super Tuesday. Got some, but of course, the primary parts are not here.....

Colt builds a decent gun. Certianly better materials than any of the other lower end mfg's. Patriot and I've had this discussion before. I don't think that much of them for their cost. BUT, if you get one, it's like anything. Familiarize yourself with it, shoot it enough to know it, and make sure it works well. IT's not worth much more than a club if it won't work when you need it, or you can't make it hit where you aim. Most rifles don't get shot enough to ever know.

Well guys, thanks for the input! I have always wanted an AR... ... ... ... preferaly not at this price! But I wanted it... ... I paid for it I'll keep it!... ..... Until my wife finds out, then I'll sell it for the motel bill!! haha:{

Let's have a little poll here... ... ... ... be honest... ... ... . How many of you have bought something somewhat expensive and kinda forgot to tell the wife.
Now don't get me wrong I don't do this very often, but had to move fast because of the shortage!!

Okay, first off... . Cuyahoga Falls... . just saw that. My SIL was a surgeon there... . hope you never met her..... squirrel...

First off, I don't deliberately hide anything from my wife. She has her money, and I have mine... . which she uses... :D She's a good one, though. She only uses my money on the house and kids. If she wants something, she uses her money. She only complains if I complain about money... or she gets tired of mowing around the Dodges in my yard... . usually the latter. I have, however, not mentioned certain things to her. I won't deliberately omit anything, but I may not mention it..... As for guns, she never complains about that, as it's something I did before she came along, and she likes to shoot, too. That kind of money is pretty big money for some people, and if it's gonna cause a big problem, I'd suggest coming clean. They'll find out, sooner or later, usually. And with all the "assault rifle" BS on the TV, she'll probably recognize it as something you didn't have before..... Now, if she's not gonna care as long as you have the money for it, then I'd start saving my money and tell her you want to buy something..... And if you put it on a credit card, she's gonna see it anyway, if she pays the bill..... And you need to get that paid off before you have to pay the interest on it!!! IMO, everyone should do without a little more, put some money in savings, and pay off what they have as soon as they can. If we see another fiasco like Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac, it may cause a lot more damage than the last time... . I think you'd be better off with a house and the money to pay the bills than a 72" TV sitting on the bare floor of your apartment you don't have electricity to turn on. Turn off the cable, the TV, the Playstation, and go paint the trim on the South end of the house before it rots out. Put your stupid I-phone down and go till the small garden in the back yard so you have organic vegatables for your table. Turn off your laptop and get off Facebook and go change your own oil in your CTD(as I'm sitting here watching it rain while I'm on TDR!! :D)

I've always been honest with my wife. I won't lie to her. And because of that, she trusts me. And I do what's right and make sure I have everything else taken care of before I get something on my want list. If I can't afford it, I don't buy it. That mentality, a work ethic, and mostly God's good grace has paid off my ranches, trucks, and house. I may not have much that's new, but it's paid for.

never have, never needed to, but I've learned one thing about rifles and hand guns; after five she lost count and it doesn't matter anymore... how cool is that?

I agree that you did fine. Be thankful that you were able to even find one available for purchase. This current gun craze is unbelievable. I am thankful, that I am good to go. Magpul Pmags are bringing insane money if they can even be found. I wouldn't mind having a few more, but that's not going to happen for a while now. Obama is the best firearm salesman in the history of the world. Ironic isn't it?

As far as the poll goes, I haven't needed to hide anything from my wife. She's good about about it, but I don't push the boundries either.

Don't be afraid to build your own either. They are about as simple as it gets when it comes to operating systems.

I agree 100% with the statement about understanding your gun. If you are buying a safe queen, be honest about it and never factor that weapon in for any usage, whatever it may be, (don't get me started about using a rifle cartridge for a home defense weapon). For myself, I put around 500 rds through it before I find that I can anticipate the weapon and it's characteristics. There are exceptions though and that is not a rule. For the most part, guns today are meant to be shot thousands of times without negligible effect.

It is not only the gun, it is also how you shoot that gun that people don't factor into the equation. I will shoot a weapon totally different that you or anyone else will. For instance, I know that when I pull the trigger on my Glock 23, that I have a slight tendency to pull her to the right as she breaks. Therefore, I factor that into the equation.

If I hear someone say a gun won't group, my first thought is the person on the other end of that barrel. What are they doing or not doing. Also what kind of maintenance has the weapon received over it's life? Also, don't expect a mass produced weapon to operate at 100% of it's intended ability right out of the box. They are mass produced... .

Ok, sorry about the tangent... I am off work right now and going crazy, (knee injury).

And for the poll, I offer this: Nope... . If you are like the rest of us, that is a big purchase. Honesty is a precious commodity in a marriage.

Well my short supply of magazines has been cured. My brother in law had the foresight to buy me 6 magpuls for xmas. Apparently he bought them for me within days after I bought the Colt early last month well before the shooting in Conn happened. He has been laughing behind my back when we have talked guns as I was feverishly looking for them to no avail the last few weeks. He figured it just saved him the hassle of trying to figure out what I would like for xmas and felt me buying the AR was a stroke of luck for him in regards to xmas.

Barry G,

That's great news. As I said, I am happy with what I have, but last night I found a site that is accepting back orders for mags (black 30 rd Maglevel Pmags), so I ordered a 10 pack just to see if I actually get them. Heck I can always sell them.

crobertson1, that site is expecting a "huge" order within a week or two.
Get on the list, they'll be back in stock soon!
FWIW Magpul is building both gen2 and gen3 Pmags as we speak. Also, I've been told by an industry insider close to magpul theyre dedicating production to BLACK mags. If you order them, order BLACK!
:D
