i was browsing the new venture gear web site and then driving on wet roads when it hit me... i need a transfer case that is full time or part time 4WD. so i can run around in full time 4wd in the rain and snow and still get good launches at the stop light. right now in 2WD i just spin the back tires even with the LSD. so i guess here is my question... has anybody ever swapped the T-case for a 242HD... this one looks like what i would want to use. it has the option for full time or part time 4WD, so while cruising run in 2WD for economy sake and when running in bad weather or racing the rice boys in town run in 4WD to get all the horses to the ground instead of making smoke out of rubber (i prefer to only make smoke out of fuel). what do ya all think? i know torque problems may be an issue, but maybe a rebuild before installation could fix that.

also might depend on the gears in the diff. I dont know for sure if the gears are the same front to rear ... My truck does a good rompty rompty in any kind of turn in 4wd on hard or simi hard surface. Full time 4wd on the street other than straight might be a little tricky

if it was a full time transfer case you wouldn't have any trouble on the street because the clutches in the transfer case slip so there is no binding, I would be concerened about being able to handle the torqueOo.
 
jkern, I like the idea of the full time 4X4 as well for the same reasons as you. Another member JHansen was talking about the same idea, maybe he will chime in. Any idea if the 242HD can handle 400+HP and 900TQ? Anyone know what its rated for?
 
Why not install a vicisous (sp?) clutch on the front driveshaft. You will have to shorten the driveshaft, but it seems like a little less work than swapping T-Cases. Also you still have the option of 2wd for the long highway cruises.



There was a write up some time ago in a TDR issue about the installation of one of these.

i was simply thinking that a t-case with a diff in it that is lockable kinda like the mid 70's GM New Process t-case would work great. i think that the center axle disconnect should take car of the front end just like it does now. i think the 242 has this type of diff in it, but it will also shift the front propeller shaft out of gear when 2WD is selected. so i guess the lever would have the following combos



2WD High

neut

4WD (full time high)

4WD (full time low)

4WD Lock (low)(for off road and max traction. this would operate like the t-case we have now).



but here is the big question... how much does this all cost???
 
low range would also be part time or off road only. as far as a vis coupling on the drive shaft that would work for full time 4wd but would not give you the part time or off road only (like our trucks are now):rolleyes:

Yes this is one of the items on my agenda for the Silver Cloud-unfortunately I haven't gotten motivated enough to do it yet. I think the 242 is THE transfer case-but the ultimate torque capacity is still an unknown. The 242HD-AMG version (Hummer-spec) is the strongest-but probably made of unobtanium (I haven't priced it out yet) and will still require an internal mod or two (2wd position is locked out internally) to be used. Not sure about driveline lengths etc either. I guess what I need to do is score a T-case and slam it in to see if it's going to work or not. DodgeTorqueWagon and I traded a lot of PMs about this project with each one of us coming up with some good info... ... but I can't remember what I did with it now :( . I know I managed to get 1 email out of a New Venture engineer that was very helpful-but successive ones went unanswered. Either he's not with NVG anymore or went deep undercover. Tried to get some answers out of a DC engineer whose email address I came across-but he couldn't help much either. Anybody got a contact # for someone in engineering at NVG? I will be the point man for the job if somebody can score a name and #... .....

Full time 4wd can be had by adding a 'viscous coupler' in the front drive shaft. It will allow a small amount of RPM difference to allow for turning. Specialtity shops can add one. This is what DC did in the newer Jeep Grand Whatevers when they deleted the center differential, it works good. I almost added one to my w4d Dakota when they first came out. Nice thing is you still have 2WD available instead of needlessly spinning the front drive shaft.
 
I would have to wonder how much you really lose with a vicous coupler. Can't imagine you would even notice it offroad. Maybe someone here who has one can clarify.

I believe the coupler in that article was a Milemarker product. I have'nt been able to find the issue yet.
