At highway speeds the turbo whistle is so loud that my wife and I have to raise our voices and I can't hear the kids in the back seat. I like the sound of a Turbo singing but hours on end it gets irritating. Is there a way to make the turbo quieter in the cab with the windows up without wrapping the turbo and exhaust and causing embrittlement of the metal?

About the only thing that will work is a thicker air filter that muffles the noise of the intake which is where most of the sound comes from. I had a K&N filter in the stock airbox on my truck for years. About the time I was deciding it was too loud, I put an Amsoil Ea filter on it; that muffled it enough so I could still just hear the turbo but it was no longer obnoxious. And that's only a stock turbo and airbox.

If it's the exhaust side that's loud, a muffler (or a different muffler) may make the difference.

I'd had an exhaust blanket on the manifold and turbo for nigh on 10 years with no ill effects.

What air intake are you using?????

If you would go from a open top air box(a AFE Stage 1 is a good example) to one that has a lid over it(AfE Stage 2,S&B,etc etc) and a dry media filter it would lower the noise greatly.

OEM air intake, or do a custom intake that pulls air from somewhere else, like the front of the enigne bay.

Wrapping the turbo won't do anything negative to the metal, but that's not where the sound is coming from, it coming from the air filter.

I am running the AFE stage II and it pulls most of the air from the fender. I have thought of pulling the air from the front but was not sure if this would help

See if you can find someone who has removed the silencer ring and will give it to you. Then install it in the nose of the turbo intake.

I ran a TAG on my 2002 on which I was running a BHAF with the stock HX35W-12 with silencing ring intact. The TAG cut probably 70% to 80% of the turbo whistle and 100% of the b****ing from my wife on a long trip pulling the 5th wheel.

Silencer ring is number one.

Wrap the pipe in header wrap is good as well.

Air guide will also help.

Cover the filter with a form of air box (but dont restrict it!! Make sure it still has ample flow! ) so the sound will not be so open.

If you have a non restrictive, pipe style intake, you can try a ribbed one. That breaks up the sound waves.

Next get some Fat Mat or Dynamat and stick it to the passenger compartment side of the firewall (Made a huge differance for me).

I run the AFE stage 2 STI on both trucks. The 2nd gen has an HX-40 with no silencer ring the whistle is very slight(the wife likes hearing a lil turbo) even towing compared to the open element systems.

I would put your money/energy into the intake. Either move it, or box it, or both.

You could also go back to stock? I don't know how good the 2nd gen setups are, but 3rd gens are good for 450+ rwhp without a restriction. Maybe a 24V setup?

Thanks for the replies. I can not run a stock air box because even the AFE stage I was fluttering the turbo on a hard pull with boost over 40# which went away with the stage II.

Rustyjc what tag did you run tag I or tag II

TAG I, IIRC. I was an early purchaser as, being in the gas turbine business, I had a lot of experience with honeycomb flow straighteners in gas turbine inlet ducts, wind tunnels, etc.

The TAG I used didn't penetrate the turbo compressor inlet housing. It fit in the recess in the factory air inlet duct at the turbocharger end and would seat against the shoulder of the compressor inlet housing when the inlet duct was slipped over the turbo inlet housing fit.
