I know that must sound like a retarded question! But before you blast me or blow me off as an idiot, please read. Since my dually's suspension is so heavy I can't get it to bounce enough with my body weight and get off fast enough to even see it move - besides I can only make it move a little bit. It's not like I'm a feather - I weigh 175#'s. "Mini" (my truck) has 173,000 miles on her with what appears to be the OEM shocks. I bought her 3 years ago when she had 112,000, so I don't know if they are or not. She has Firestone air bag helpers in the rear and was used to pull horse trailers in Texas. I'm about to do a 1300 mile trip pulling my 30' car hauler.

Asking whether or not to replace a set of $60 shocks on a truck with 173k miles might seem like a no brainer, but she rides pretty nice. My brand new 2500 4x4 diesel's ride is harsher - Mini has a lot more float and doesn't have the typical 4x4 feel. Good thing because she's 2wd! I haven't had any of the "Death Wobble" or any other such steering issues. My only complaint about the ride is the vibration I get starting around 60MPH. I feels like an out of balance tire but new tires, and alignment with rotating the tires every 7000 miles has done nothing to eliminate the shakes on the highway. The ball joints and other suspension parts all look fine and are lubricated every oil change. My front tires always feather inside and out even with the regular rotation which makes me think the alignments shops here don't know how to do a dually. Well guys, let me know what you think and go easy on me with the " when to replace the shocks" part!!

The tire wear is usually the indicator of worn front shocks. The tires get "scrubbed" every time the truck extends from the wheel assy. It can happen so fast and so little, just enough to unload the tire, that you don't feel it on a heavy truck. That's a real over simplification, but you need new shocks.

Welcome to the TDR. :)

I replaced my shocks (looked like they were the originals) at ~170k miles. They were SHOT. The new Bilsteins got rid of the body roll, and firmed up the ride a little.

Dont' sweat the "when to replace the shocks" KD. I replaced my shocks when I bought the truck a few years ago with Monroes and now often wonder if I'd these ones are shot (100k miles later) or if I'd be better off with better shocks. I'm pretty sure that next year when I start putting miles on with the fiver I'm going to need new shocks, these just don't seem to cut it with any weight on the back. Unloaded if I run down a crappy piece of choppy concrete interstate it starts to bounce so bad I almost come out of the seat. I-5 through Tacoma/Seattle comes and I-65 through Louisville tend to have just the right surface to get it bouncing, I wonder if a set of Biltsteins or Ranchos would make life smoother.

I replaced mine within 200 miles of purchase with Bilsteins. The originals could be compressed w/one finger. How much dampening could they have? They were just too mushy for my taste.

I just replaced my stock shocks with Bilsteins 2 weeks ago. The truck only has 54K on it but the old shocks were shot. easy to compress and almost no rebound. the steering response is better, the ride more stable and overall a better ride altogether. I don't think I would have known how bad they were if I had not changed them, I just got used to how they felt but they were probably gone for a while.

I felt the same at around 60k on my 02. Changed out with four Bilsteins...

In my case it was a job way overdue. Much more stable at higher speeds. one front shock was totally gone. the other front was marginal. The rears, same one totally gone the other ok.

Thanks for the input

I ordered up a set of 4 Bilsteins today from Off Road Warehouse at $53. 99 with no charge for shipping. I hope they perform as advertised.

I traded in a 98 with 100K on the clock, It had Bilsteins with 60K miles on them. On the way home with my 2002 (Dealer Demo with only 4K miles on it) I hadn't gotten 10 miles down the road when I realized "boy I miss my Bilsteins"!

In other words, put a set of Bilsteins on a brand new truck and you will sware the shocks you removed were bad!

Are the Bilstein shocks being discussed here the 5100 series or the Bilstein "replacement" shock? I was looking at the 5100s but my truck isn't lifted so it looks like I have to go with the "replacement" version.

I had the replacment ones on my 98.
