Scott, I've never had a problem. I just turn the drain plug a few turns without removing and leave it for a few hours. All the oil drains and the filter siphons down about 1/4 also, no oil except on the end of the wrench.

What aggravates you most? The spill or the captain? Just joking. I have a retired riverpilot nextdoor too. They just know a good diesel when they see one.

I have done my oil twice now, so I am a real expert. First time I let the truck sit for several hours to let the injection pump drain. Then did the change. Spilled taking out the filter. Also dripped a lot from the filter housing. Second time parked in driveway and let sit overnight. The oil was not warm so it does not drain as easy. But the filter had siphoned down a little. Not a drop from the filter or the housing.

Like has been already mentioned, let the 12 valve sit so the oil properly drains out of the injection pump. On mine, it seems to siphon more than 1/4 out of the filter. Slip a plastic bag over the filter anyway so you can tilt it while removing. It is more tricky to prefill the filter with fresh oil and not spill any. Remove the air cleaner/turbo hose to give better access. I have Geno's finger touch drain valve for wrench free plug "removal".

It either happens when I'm pulling the drain plug or wrestling with the filter. I usually don't spill any when filling her back up. Oh well, just wanted to vent a bit.

Buy the quick drain kit from Geno's garage.
You just screw on the hose and it all neatly
pours into the drain pan. Even on a windy day. The oil left in the filter always settles an inch from the top so if you screw it off straight there is no problem. I like the plastic bag idea the last guy wrote.

Oh, I know all the tricks. This time I did not remove the drain plug fully, but let the oil drain around it. I let it sit overnight to get all the oil out. Also, I do the plastic bag trick around the filter.

What caused the spill this time was the lack of a filter wrench! Last time I did my oil, I was able to spin off the filter by hand, and I put the new one on by hand. So, I thought when I came time to change it, I wouldn't have much trouble getting it off. NOPE! Grrrrrr. So, I finally used the old screw driver through the side trick (inside the bag to contain the spill. ) Worked great, up until the bag snagged on something when I was pulling it out! Some oil spilled out of the bag as I moved it over to the drain pan.

Oh well, I'll have a new garage floor in a month (buying a new house!) Maybe I can start out by not turning it into Prince William Sound! #ad

Yeah I did that screwdriver thing once, with an old van I had. Oil sure does taste bad.

Scollins, The one time I changed my oil without spilling a drop I pulled the pan out from under the truck and put it right in the path of my tractor! Ran the whole 11 qt pan over. Oil EVERYWHERE. Thank god for sawdust.
