How Deep - No Tire Chains ?

How deep of snow have you guys run without chains? I live out on 2. 5 miles of dirt non maintained/ploughed roads. I figure that I should be able to handle 15 inches or so with my KO's.

Depends on conditions, I got stuck in the mountains this week in about 15 inches of snow. Took 2 hours to get out. I have good BFG A/Ts on my truck. I would suggest plowing or having somone plow and having chains. Better to have them and not need them. I wish I would have had them. If you have an ATV with a plow it is pretty fun in my opinion to do.

When you are dragging the differentials, etc. through deep snow, it is easy to get stuck.

Depends on the snow. The kind we're getting in N. Nevada today... not so much! If it's that really light fluffy stuff, it's not so bad. The wet kind is very slippery, even with traction tires. I carry a set of chains, not only for snow, but muddy roads. Good luck!

Last winter I went through snow over the front bumper with no problem. This was fresh snow that was not packed, and with the BFG Rugged Tails that came on the truck.

General rule of thumb from down on the farm:



Does not matter what you are driving or what you are driving through: When the undercarriage starts dragging/scraping (more than just lightly touching) you are almost done. Does not matter whether it is a tractor in mud or a pickup or car in snow. Not an absolute, but covers most situations.

When the snow would get so bad that first the 4x4s would not go , then the 6x6s wouldn't go either and all we had left was the loader with chains (Yer gonna love this, Dodge fans) Yep, the "52" power wagon with chains and those big gnarly army tires would still be pushing strong! True story.

All I know is, when we got 8 feet, yes that's 8 feet, I never even bothered attempting to get my '01. 5 CTD out of the garage! We ended having to pay $300 per hour for a huge front end loader to clear our driveway which took him 2. 5 hours! But after being snowed in for a week, we were glad to pay it! We then promptly went out for dinner.

All I know is, when we got 8 feet, yes that's 8 feet.

Wow! How long did it take to get the 8 ft? We had 5 ft on the ground on Nov 11, 1996 - and that was in 4 days.

I switch to studded tires around this time of year (little snow in Spudville yet). Don't think the stock Michelins are worth anything on slick stuff, IMO. doc

In that same storm Craig is talking about above we had drifts over 12 feet tall. I got stuck going over to the neighbors to feed their horses. I couldn't see the drift in the white out conditions and put my cummins up on a 4 foot deep drift. Neighbor tried to pull me out, but couldn't get within 30 feet following my tracks in his PSD. Drifts were like wet concrete, very heavy and packed hard. I have on the other hand driven pushing snow over the hood in the lighter fresh stuff. I was very happy with the BFG AT/TA KO's.



It's been snowing here for the last 2 days! Oo.

If I rememeber correctly, It seems like it started snowing Moday night, the 17th of March. I plowed before I went to bed, at about 9 or 10, and when I got up at 5:00 the next morning, we had about 3 feet. I should never have went to bed! I plow with a 4x4 Polaris and it wouldn't move. It didn't stop snowing until that Wednesday. The news kept saying we could get 8 feet and I kept saying "yeah right". I learned several lessons that storm. This was in March of '03. That snow was wet and HEAVY.



Tim, it's been snowing here too. In fact, I'm going out to plow right now. See ya next weekend.

Being my first post {newbie to tdr} I would like to first say Hi and thanks for all the useful info I have received in the past. . I am also jealous. Living in Pa. with a meyers 7. 6 plow and salt spreader I am lucky we get anything over 6 inches. Anytime you wanna send that snow this way---I will gladly welcome it!!!!
