I know the exhaust brakes for our trucks are way different than an engine/Jake brake, so I imagine the sound would be way different too. Do you have a good description of the sound when braking? or maybe an audio file? Still doing research on whether I want one or not.

With the windows down, the best way I can desribe it is a wistleing sound. Not objectionable, and not real loud (as opposed to a real jake engine brake). I certainly wouldn't let the noise discourage you from getting one.

Well, it is NOT going to sound like the rat, tat, tat, tat of an engine brake, but it does have some of that character, although it is muted and overshadowed by the aforementioned "whoosing" sound.

We are all kids at heart

got to love it coming out of covered parking garages

lower gear/high rpm's/ lots of fun

if you want more noise take muffer off

best add on you can buy

At idle:

clack,clack,clack... fwoop, gug, gug, gug, gug, pwhooosh... clack, clack, clack...

There I turned it on and off.

At speed, downshifting and turning it on is a little like turning on a vacuum cleaner with a loud rug beater attached.

(couldn't resist)

The exhaust brake has the same sound, more or less, as the exhaust as you coast down, but somewhat louder.

go out and shove a potato in your exhaust. . at the back that's what it sounds like... LOL [one with irregular shape so some exhaust can pass by]

Hey, I was gonna say potato.

just put your foot up against the end of the pipe, kinda constipated sounding.

If all you want is just to hear the sound, I will sell you a tape recording of mine, you can play it when you let off the throttle or put on the brakes and that would be bout $650 cheaper than having one installed.

My favorite is the release, how many get asked... "ya got air brakes on that truck" :D

With the 6" stack and the brake on, mine sounds like 747 Heavy on the tarmac awaiting the green light :--)

Well, maybe a 'gluup' or 'glupe', this is the sound the valve makes closing, maybe a 'flupe'. I think the back pressure helps it close a little, kind of hurries it along. Kind of like dropping the stopper into the sink drain after the water has had a chance to develop some momentum... .

I rolled up to a light on the downhill and released the brake just before coming to a complete stop. The guy in the lane next to me looked up and asked me how things looked from up there :D

It's a beautiful thing!!

Mine's been described, accurately, I might add...

... as sounding like a steam engine venting pressure, while your truck low-idles about 40 feet away (this is w/ 4" open pipe) a "cat" and a muffler/resonator will most certainly change the acoustics...
