How do I get the $#@%&* stock muffler apart

I had to cut mine with a chisel and roll the cuts back. It took a lot of patience.

the factory clamps crimp the tube so the easiest way to get it apart is to cut the tube.

Seriously, when I installed my MBRP exhaust, I took the easy route out. Even using the sawzall, it took longet to get the old exhaust out than it took to get the new one in.

It takes a lot of time to accomplish without cutting the pipe. I was able to get mine off after a lot of pounding, winching, wiggling, twisting, and cussing before it gave up it's death grip. Wanted the ability to put the original muffler on before selling it so that's why i didn't cut anything. Just get mad with it. Good luck! Maybe heat it with a torch and get the rear wheels off the ground (heavy duty ramps) so you have more room to work???

Just Recently Took

Mine Apart Take A Cutoff Make Three Opposing Cuts To The Outside Pipe To The Dimple Made By The Clamp. A Little Pentrating Oil At Each Cut Wait A Few And Should Come Right Apart.

By Doing This You Can Reuse And Get A Seal If You Put It Back Together.

i did the same [and broke one blade in the process] and it took longer removing the old than putting the 5" ones in. .

Wanted to keep mine intact as well, so I took the whole system off in one piece. All I had to do was jack the truck up, remove the spare tire, and the transmission crossmember and walla! Out came the old exhaust. I came to this decision of course after I had tried to take it apart at the muffler (ya that was a no go).

If you don't want to cut (the easiest way), there are "muffler spoons", meant just for pounding into the joint , to split the two pipes apart. You'll need good "swinging" access with the BFH and good safety goggles and a hat to keep all the rust out of your hair. Once you get them apart, there is also a pipe expander. It's used to spread the pipe opening and round it if you have to insert another into it, but the crimp is still too tight after the spoon work.

custom set of clamps one on each side of the joint with bolts between them to spread the joint apart. make sense, I would post pics but the ole computer is missing something and not allowing it. I know jc whitney has them for small tubing but the big stuff required custom stuff.

Take a torch and cut the 1 slot on each side of the pipe coming out up the muffler. Once that is done you can move it up and down and it will work it loose and come right off.

My experience has been to always use a acetylene torch and heat to cherry red, this will let you expand the crimp as it is pulled out of the pipe. If you don't have a torch you may have to destroy one of the pipes
