How do I know what transmission I have?

I have a 2003 3500 cummins. How do I tell what kind on transmission I have? Is the model on a sticker somewhere? Do I have to crawl under the truck to see a plack? I understand there are several different automatic 4 speeds. My towing capability is dependant on the transmission.

If you have the HO engine, then it's a 48RE. Check the sticker on the driver's side of the valve cover. If it's the HO motor, the hp rating will be 305.



If you have the SO engine, the sticker will show a lower hp rating (235?) and you could have either the 48RE or 47RE, depending on build date. Someone else will have to help you with the date.

03 SO and HO's had both the 47re and 48re.

All HO's had only the 48re so if your engine sticker says 305 hp motor then you have the 48re.



If your engine sticker says 235 or 250 hp motor then you could have either one and the original window sticker would list which one.

Knowing the build date of the truck would help a lot. If it's an early 2003, then you have the 47RE. If it's a late 2003, then you have the 48RE. If it was built mid model year (Dec 2002/Jan 2003), then it could be either.
