How do I know when truck is in regeneration?

My 6.7 ltr dyno number

Is the 6.7L Turbo Water Cooled

Mine did it a few weeks ago.

I heard a "ding", and there was a message on the overhead console that it was regenerating. I was driving to work, it took about 15 minutes to complete.

I wish we could manually start the regeneration, so I could do it under more ideal conditions.

Not all trucks will tell you that Regen is occurring or not. The only true way is with a EGT gage and the pyro mounted in the exhaust manifold. This monitors the EGT and you can tell as the temp rises. When I am in regen with the EGR plugged in I am normally between 1000F and 1350F for 15 to 20 min. With the EGR unplugged I run around 800F and 1100F same time period but not as often on the regen process. With the EGR unplugged it seems to regen less often.

on mine you can tell just by listening... alot deeper tone at takeoff, when you slow down w/exhaust brake on, it kinda sounds like its fightn against the motor at a stop, and its alot peppier above 22-2300 rpm. but i have an older flash, and a c&c... so it might not be noticeable on the pickups

also, there is a very distinct smell associated w/ it

If you have a pyrometer and Exhaust temperature gauge, you could see the passive regens taking place. And when you step out of your vehicle while this is taking place, or shut your vehicle off in the middle of a passive regen, you will hear the crackle and pop coming from the DPF and smell the 'high heat' smell coming from your exhaust.

For some reason, mine has stopped doing any of that.

My c&c does the same, and when ideling sounds like a jet about to take off.

My dpf lasted for 150,000 miles with a clean exhaust pipe then started coming apart. The tech I use said they aren't lifetime, should last 150 - 175k miles. They were around $2200 at that time.

When my truck was new it would blow a blue-white smoke sometimes when it was doing a regeneration. They don't all do it, but some do. I talked about it right after I got the truck, Nov. , Dec. of 06.

Correct on point one. Useful life is about 175,000 miles but that depends on many factors.

well, sounds like mine will be traded off at around 100k... .

gives me a good excuse for a new truck... . ummm, dpf needs replaced, better get a new truck around it too. lol

My C+C does similar stuff to the other C+C's. Only I don't have to have the EB on to notice it. Mine sounds like the EB won't shut off and the surge at low throttle puttering around is annoying.

Also my Edge insight will show "regen staus 'ON'"

Hopefully this won't be an issue for long...

I have never been able to tell when my regen was taking place. No change in sound, no smoke, no change in performance. I do not have any guages (EGT etc) that can help me out as my truck is all OEM and no mods at this time still. I had problems with overhead alerts at 8000 to 10000 miles, I would hear that dreaded "ding" look up and see "service needed-reduced power" and that was with no prior warning. took a visit to a dealer for new flash and havent had any problems since then with the DPF regens. Dodge should have put some kind of alert on so that you could know when the regen was happening so you would not have to interrupt the regen. My question is: Does the regen finish from where it left off if you turn the truck off? Too many questions about this issue on the forums... never been adequately satisfied because of all the different replies and dealerships are no help either. One told me it would not work if my cruise control switch was on. . even if I wasnt using it... just the switch being on would stop the regen when needed. Now THAT just dosent make any sense at all!

1. Regen will terminate upon turning the engine off. Regen will not start up again until the system sense back pressure in the exhaust at the DPF. Before I retired from a large equipment manufacture we were looking at a program that would prevent turning off the engine when the regen process was under way. Once completed the engine would shut down if the engine had been switched off by the operator. The way the regen process works is a differential pressure switch is install in the exhaust system. When this sense a difference in the current state of exhaust pressure, then regen is started to eliminate the diesel particular particles causing the increase in back pressure.

2. Regen will occur regardless if the cruise control is engaged or not.

Dodge and Cummins have produced a DVD with Sam Memmolo explaining the 6. 7L Cummins engine and the maintenance of this engine. Part number is 81-326-8070 I believe, this is on the back of my cope.

Hope this helps.

Mine will go back into regen as soon as the engine temp is high enough, 140* I think. Many times it has started a regen late on Fri. and since I use my truck for my only personal vehicle as well, it will stay in regen all weekend. Multiple starts and stops. Regen continues until it's satisfied whatever the requirements are.

Maybe it will still sense back pressure until the regen is complete. That would keep it coming back until it's done.

I've never shut my truck off while it's in regen and had the regen stay away for another full cycle. Mine seems to go by time more than anything. 72,000 seconds on the insight like, well, clockwork.

I guess the c&c must be very different form the standard pickup, it is very noticable when mine is in regen. Low end power is gone a first, then I get this sudden urge of power, the mpg drops, egt's go to around 900 cruisein, and the very distinct sound.

My truck has never said anything but "System OK". . I put the Edge system in and would highly reccommend it. . You get the boost, the guages and most important you will see when driving down the highway how often it goes into passive regen. . You will also be amazed how often it goes active as well. As soon as you put it in park, the active regen turns off but the EGT's are still real high coming down. I have the turbo timer set at 400 degrees so I walk away, lock the truck and it shuts down when it hits 400 degrees. . this has to save the turbo and add more life to it... without the guage many of you will never know when it's in active regen until your filter is almost full... Sure glad the truck shop talked me into the multi-function Edge product. . taps into your OBD2 port, which is a piece of cake. . I monitor trans temp, turbo boost, egt's and regen...

which exact product are you talking about? do you have a link?
