Here are some pics of how I overfill my getrag by one quart. This first pic is of the passenger side of getrag. Showing fill hole and PTO cover bolts. I remove the top bolt out of the PTO cover and use a simple pump that originally came from Wallyworld in a outboard boat motor lower unit gear oil kit. I'm sure one can buy this pump from a parts store or use something similar. The pump has a threaded tip that threads nicely into the PTO bolt hole, and screws down onto you 5w30 bottle. Only thing is if you use Mobil One synthetic engine oil, they come with a big mouth bottle, not like conventional motor oil or gear oil bottles' caps, as you will see in pics. What I will use is a empty gear oil bottle, or if one fears contamination from gear oil, one can use a empty conventional motor oil quart and fill it with the contents of the Mobil one motor oil, then repeat for the 4. 5-5 quarts. Simple no spills, no fooling around with shifter removal or should I say shifter installation.

pump screws down onto gear or motor oil bottle

Pic showing the big mouth cap of Mobil one oil compared to a conventional motor oil cap and gear oil cap.

I fill my NV-4500 through the top by removing the shift tower. Wouldn't this work with a Getrag? It would be easy to overfill it.

In the pic of the oils on your toolbox, I mistook it for my garage for a second! Same compressor, same toolbox. Sears... what else can I say?

Thanks very much Bill, awesome post... only problem here is I've NEVER seen a pump like that in my life, and we dont have a Wallyworlds out here. If I could get my hands on one of those I think what i would do is just dump the oil into a pail and pump away... maybe drill a hole in the lid just big enough for the pump shaft... then you could use the same pail for all your pumping needs... I like this method. I think if the thread works for the pto it will work for the diffs too right? You didn't have to go out into the rain thou :p Good job man :)

This is the part where I edit the post cause i forgot to mention something:

You been to Africa lately? Sure looks like you got a Lion in that cage and I'm having a hard time making out what the grey thing is, I'm leaning towards a baby elephant. Dam it just struck me... that's perfect! When you want to work on your truck or have a meeting with tha boyz in your office/garage just let the Lion loose and the wife won't bug ya! Or chain him up to the beer fridge to guard that. You're a genious man:)

I got a pump like that from NAPA

I bought it for gear oil but I also use it for my Getrag filler. I just buy a 5 gallon jug of mobile 1 or oil of choice and pump away. You can extend the bottom of the pump to reach /w more tube or pour into a diff container if it dosent reach.

Me I just cut a slit in the oil container pull it out put the cap on the top and pump out of the hole in the side till it's all gone!

That's what I was thinking too

I found the shifter a PITA both to get out and put back in by myself... I needed a second set of hands to reinstall it, but I hadn't tried the method of using your shoulder or whatever on the actual shifter to hold it down. I think the pump method would be quicker and easier considering you gotta get down there anyways, just my opinion tho.

I believe it. The older NV-4500 could be a PITA as well, before they put the removeable towers on them. That's why it's easy for you Mad Bomber. They don't make short shift kits for the older ones becasue of the design so you've never experienced the "push an twist" shifter removal.
