Computer Wizards...Help!!!

According to the directions when I click on search, It says to use AND between two words. I am trying to search for BRAKE CONTROLLER in the towing area so I type in ... brake AND controller ... then clicked on search. However, it brings up every topic that has the word BRAKE in it without the word CONTROLLER.

Where does one go to get more specific instructions on how to use different features of this new system. I have not found a HELP section to click on.

I have also had problems searching to get the specific info in a search. I have found the best way to get things is just to type in the whol thing. "Brake Controller" brought up a good deal of threads. As far as figuring out what is useful..... you still have to sort through them. Maybe there's an easy way we don't know of.

I've said this before and I'll say it again. This search engine just plain sucks!!!! It's extremely fast at finding things I don't want. For example, quote strings are not supported. If they were you could search for "brake controller" and it would find strings that contained that exact sequence of characters. I get yelled at when I say this of course.

That's strange - I just did a search on brake and controller and it only pulled up messages that had both brake and controller in it just like it should. Are you sure that controller wasn't in the thread anywhere? You can check that once you are in the thread by hitting Ctrl-F and searching for controller. I'd be willing to bet the word controller is in there somewhere. You can prove this out by doing a search on "brake and controller and mama" - it will come up with zero results, if you do a search on "brake and controller" it comes up with 597 results and if you do a search on "mama" it comes up with 17 results - but there aren't any that have all three words in them. All of those searches were on all forums for all dates. One thing that may help is if you click on show results as posts at the bottom instead of show results as threads - then it will only bring up posts that have brake and controller in one message, it won't bring them up if brake is in one message and controller is in another. Once the search results come up you can choose whether to view just that post or the entire thread. For a help section on the features of the board click on f. a. q. in the upper right hand corner of the forums.

Joe G - I agree it would be nice if quote strings were supported - maybe that will come out in a future release of this software. Unforetunately we do not have access to the source code for this software so we are unable to make changes such as that - we have to live with what they give us. This was the best package we could find. Here is the website address for Vbulletin - http://www.vbulletin.com/ - for any features you guys would like to see in the forums that they don't currently have email them and request that they add it in future versions. I'm going there now to mention the supporting quote strings in the search feature - but the more people that mention it the more likely it will get into the next release.

Steve, I think you are completely missing my point. I don't want to find something that has BRAKE in one part and CONTROLLER some where else. I want the phrase BRAKE CONTROLLER. Earlier instructions said to use the word AND between the two words but this phrase does not show up when you do that.

This is the first search I have used on the Internet where I could not search for a phrase, a phrase meaning two or more words one immediately following the other.

Even the old TDR search allowed this. At least I never had a problem doing so. All the other nice cosmetic things with this new system do not make up for the lack of a good search system. I just don't understand why this was not thought of before.

In search engines like Google, I put " "s around the phrase. It works like using the AND command. I tried it here and got the same response that you did, B'Gate. It appears that the search here will not allow you to achieve your goal. Maybe with the next upgrade it will be possible.
