How do you take the black plastic crap of of the tailgate. I was thinking Just a blowdryer. and then the sticky stuff. if there is any how to take that off thanks

I have not tried this but would be interested in knowing what you find out.

I'm sick of dealing with the black plastic turning white and having to use black magic, armor all, etc. to restore it back to black every time I clean my truck.

Yup, use a heat gun (aka hair-dryer) to soften the adhesive. Service procedure suggests 100 degrees F. Then pull the plastic off. For the residual goo removal I have had great success with 3M Brand Adhesive remover. I don't have the part number but it's a red and white can and I got it at the local marine/boat store.

As far as restoring the black plastic, I have heard of better (Meguiar's?) products now that actually DO restore the plastic, and don't just cover it up and make it look pretty for a week. I'll post if I find out more.

As far as adhesive remover I have used the "3M Adhesive & Wax Remover" Part number 03607. Available at most auto parts stores.

I'll third the 3M adhesive remover. Great stuff. I used to use it for this exact purpose when I worked at an auto body shop!

911RAM,

Let me know how it goes. Last weekend I spent all day Saturday replacing the body (side) molding on my truck. This job was a royal PITA. I may feel up to removing my plastic molding from the tailgate in a few weeks - right now I am sick of removing adhesive residue from my truck. Looks a lot better without that "chrome" plastic flaking off on my original molding.

Curious, A friend of mine uses liquid shoe polish on his Jeeps black plastic pieces. SO, I tried white shoe polish on parts of my Travel Trailer that were turning yellow after just one year. That was 2 years ago and they are still white as new. Took me 3 coats to get total coverage. Sounds crazy but it worked for me and a friend. FWIW

i took it off my 94 a few years ago. just 2 sided tape holding it on.

lots of crud built up under there over the years. goo-gone worked fine for removing the tape and then a good brand of cleaner wax on the whole gate will do the trick.
