How do you check for codes

I keep reading all these posts on here about different codes stored. I don't want to sound ignorant, but how do you check for them? If there are any, how do you figure out what they mean?

Put key in ignition and cycle it 3 times with the 3rd time leaving it in the on position and wait and read the odometer and it will go through all the codes if any and then it will say done.

Turn your ignition to the on (not start) position three times and on the third time leave the key in the on position and the codes will read out on your dash. Have a pen and pad handy to record the codes displayed.
