Dont gut your cats guys, I have an extra piece of 4" stainless steel pipe the same length as the cat all you have to do is cut the cat off and weld this piece instead, if someone wants it, just pay the shipping charges and its yours free of charge, my way of saying thank you for alot of advise given to me from this awesome website. First come first serve, just PM me.

went to dealer awhile ago about the cat, they said diesels are exepmt from emissions so would pass inspection without a cat.

atlease thats in PA :)

I do not mean to run away with your thread, but. For all you guys that are gutting your cat converters, I would pay for the shipping for you to send the contents to me, for recycling purposes. That is if you intend to just throw it in the trash anyway. I collect old catalytic converters to sell to a recycler. Also if you are in N. D. or anywhere in eastern half of Montana( from Shelby and Great Falls and east), and want to get rid of your old converter, let me know and I will stop by and pick it up. I travel extensively through these areas. Thanx

What is the cat made of inside that you take it to the recycler? Just asking for curiosity.

I'm unsure if it's the same for the diesel cats as it is for the gasoline ones, but the gasoline catalytic converters have some platinum in them that they reclaim...

Does anybody sell a premade pipe that secures in place the same way the cat does? I'm interested in a solution I can swap out easily if the need ever arises.

I am not sure, but I guess that there are about 3 different types of material. Depending on which auto manufacturer, has a lot to do with what kind of catalist is used. I guess that GM are the most sought after, though.

Would a dealership know if you've been messing around and knocked out the innards of the cat? Can they do a diagnostic test to discover it? And how about state inspection, can they catch this kind of thing? Don't want to get giged by state inspection or blow my warrenty. :(

I believe that state inspections can tell. They hook a contraption up to the exhaust and sample it. If you don't have the Cat, your exhaust will be off kilter quite a bit. I don't think it's worth the risk. Now maybe with an 04. 5 you'd be okay, as your registration probably says 04, which didn't have the cat, but 05's and up, I"d not screw with it. Stiff fines... ...

Maybe you fellas that live in the states that inspect these vehicles, might want to consider a cat bypass system. that way you could switch back to Cat when getting checked.

This would be the route I would take if I had a cat on my truck. Having the 03 no cat. As crazy as some of these laws are getting it could come to the point even getting stopped by a cop and checked out, heavy fine or shutting you down on the spot until corrected, who knows.

I just hope they don't start making the ones with no factory cat to start with, install one. I'm for clean air like most people are, but I believe a lot of their ideas are to squeeze more money out of our pockets.

Yeah Tony, I never could understand the reasoning behind the EPA, (or whoever it is), when what they make us do to make each gallon we use cleaner, but then it takes twice as much fuel to do what we intend to do. It's kinda a win lose situation. I think they should put their "total" efforts into what will make the best mileage! Then see what they can do to clean it up. Wouldn't that be a win win situation? I guess their are no perfect answers.
