Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) How do you deal with the obnoxiously loud idle tone of straight pipes?

I recently removed the stock muffler and resonator and the sound driving around town or cruising on the interstate is great and suprisingly I got no drone inside the cab. BUT, at idle you can't stand anywhere around the truck and try to halfway carry on a conversation because its SOOOO loud at idle. I had people commenting all the time asking how I could possibly stand my truck to be that loud, although I told them how good it sounds accelerating. Anyway, I heard Powerstrokes all the time with straight pipes that are quite at idle and only loud when you step down on it. Are those of you with straight pipes just dealing with the loud exhaust tone at idle?

the price

Its the price you pay when you want to play. I do it every summer just to get back at all the punk kids with their rice burners and show them what loud really is. :)

My '01 was loud before I cut the muffler off and replaced it with 52" piece of pipe.

I have ordered 4" from turbo back and will place a muffler back on, but it will still be loud. These 24V's are just loud.

I was really surprised to find out just how big of an impact the stacks had on the loudness of the truck at idle. It directs it up and gives it a more deep tone at idle but it is a little quieter. Noise doesn't bother me though. I love it!!!

I'll chime in again.

The bestest sounding 24v under-the-truck exhaust I've heard is mine. It is a 5-inch pipe necked to 4" downpipe to 3" turbo (Dodgezilla Hybrid). As a straight pipe it was way way too loud. I could hear it bouncing off mailboxes and street signs. :p and it droned something fantastic around 1800.

So I bought a full-sized big rig muffler and stuck it on there. Whoops wrong one--it was heavily baffled. So I cut out the heavy baffles--not easy. Now it's a deep-mellow-loud SOB, but not obnoxious.

If I did it again I'd try a 5" resonator. ;) MOF I'll put a resonator under the truck when I do the wifey's stacks.

I just shut it off when I have to talk to someone or at the drive thru.

For a while I had just the downpipe and I ran the truck like that. Would almost vibrate the floor board :D

How did it sound with just a downpipe?

I have twice the excitment with having dual pipes at wheel level. If I could do it, I would make mine even louder, but I think mine is as loud as it goes. Scrappy can tell you how mine sounds a little different with the dual pipes on it.

I'd like to see some pics of your setup. Do you have a 4" downpipe that splits into dual 3"? I wanna try a setup like that but with the pipes turning out in front of the tires.

I got my system from Rip and it is the 4" to dual 3's. If you want the duals to come out in front of the tires, you will have to do most of your own work, as it is very tight with the fuel tank in the way. His system is designed to come out the rear, but I had mine modified by the local Midas shop and I like it.

Hope that helps.

What did you say? I can't here you over my loud pipes. Just kidding, i really love the sound of my truck, but i do have to shut it down at drive-ins. Randy :-laf :-laf :-laf

It sounded like a big rig :D When I did it, I was revving it up outside and a guy down the street had stopped for lunch with his Cement truck. Well he's out there revving that KW :-laf

He stopped by the house and asked what I did to the truck because it sounded badass!

After I put the tailpipe on I was disappointed I couldn't here it anymore :{

One day I dropped off my truck to get aligned and as I was walking home I heard a beautiful exhaust sound of a diesel. I turned around to see what it was. Guess what... my truck :D
