Guess maybe I should have asked this question first. I find it hard to believe that a 4 x 4 truck would not have limited a slip rear diff. I checked my window sticker and ran the VIN # and the anti-spin option did not appear. 9 times out of 10 both wheels spin when pulling out of a gravel drive or when off road. Just occasionally only one spins. What is the definitive method to determine if the axle is limited slip or not. As I said in the previous post, the dealer says it is an open diff.

Other than jacking up both rear wheels and spinning one, the easiest way I know is to check the sticker on the inside of the glove compartment door. As I recall, my 2002 shows the 4. 10 limited slip on that sticker.

If you choose the jack-up-and-spin method, with the transmission in neutral, the opposite side wheel will spin the opposite direction with an open differential, but the same direction with a limited slip differential.

There should also be a tag on the differential cover as well. Not believing tags, I gave it the ol' spin test. ;) If you just jack up one rear wheel, you will find it is quite an effort to turn it.

My truck has a sticker under the hood. When the hood is raised, the sticker is above my head on the front of the hood. The limited slip will be referenced there if you have it.

Easier test.

Get on a back road or other steep spot where you can drop a tire off the pavement, preferrably grass or loose gravel. Get one tire out there and stop dead still. Then gun it hard enough to spin the off-road tire. If you can't move you have an open diff or a malfunctioning LSD.
