What type of home phone service do you have?

How old is everyone here?

A gun is a gun. I can shoot someone with a 30/30 just as easy as a mini-14 with a 30 round clip. Its about time this stupid law lapsed.

What a crock!

By the definitions in the bill, my Brown Bess flintlock musket is an assault weapon. Get a life, Do-Gooders!

Now I can get the 'evil' bayonet lug!!!

Like anyone has used the bayo lug to commit a crime. Thank God this POS law expired. When it comes up again, there will be no expiration and it will be much worse.

I am by no means an authority on weapons. I have learned quite a bit here from fellow TDR members and still consider myself green. But, I heard a story over the weekend (on NPR of all places!) This whole assault weapon ban that was in force was a bunch of "warm & fuzzy feel good- ism" (my words. ) It was total bunk as i interpereted it! There was no ban on actual weapons. The supposed guns that were 'banned" were still available at any legitimate gun shop minus a few options. The same weapon without a suppressor, bayonette mount, multi- round clip was available the last ten years as it is now! The only thing that the "ban" resrticted was the addition of the above listed items on automatic weapons. Again- I am no expert, but this is the way it seemed to me when I heard the story. Plus- it was on NPR so it HAS to be true :p

I am curious- how does the above musket fit the definition of an assault weapon? (I'm not intending to be argumentative, just not familiar with antique weapons. )

edit II- I mistakenly identified the suppressor incorrectly in the original post. (corrected now)

You've explained it well.....

The anti-gun crowd labeled the "military style" guns as assault rifles. The law stated that a civilian could only purchase a rifle if it did not have three or more of the following: flash suppressor, bayonet lug, pistol grip, detachable magazine, and in some cases a collapsible stock. As an example the AR-15's had all of the above so the manufacturers removed the bayonet lug and flash hider and no longer offered them with a collapsible stock. The Ruger "Mini" rifles have a detachable magazine but none of the other items so they were not affected.

In the 17 or 1800's the "military rifle" was the flintlock and fitted with a bayonet would probably be considered an assault rifle. :-laf

The law was just a stepping stone. The anti-gun crowd would have been able to get more passed if there was not a changing of the guard and a lot of hard work by the NRA and other pro-gun organizations.

One down, many to go

I'm glad it's over. Living in NJ, it dont make a difference to me. Most things in the bill are still illegal here... and more, but I'd like to think I can move to a free state someday and purchase a gun with a flash hider on it.

Eric

PS Now if they'd just repeal the assinine law his dad enacted, the importation law in 1989, the GCA 68, 1934 laws, and get something nationwide like a Vermont style CCW, we'd actually HAVE the second amendment back.

i think that the assault weapons ban was a complete joke. i also think that a lot of other people think the same thing since it was never renewed. what the hell was it supposed to do, prevent some nut job from killing people? if they are going to kill, they are going to kill. it doesn't matter what method they use. anyway, i'm glad that bill is gone. i am a member of the NRA and i think everyone should be.

For those of you who voted it was bad, I'd like to hear your thoughts as to why. If you are concerned about being attacked in this forum, pm me, and I won't reveal your identity if that is an issue. The extension that McCarthy et al were trying to push actually included pretty much everything with a semiautomatic action, like the Remington 1100 shotgun. What is the saying... give them an inch and they'll take a mile?

The local media was really blowing the whole deal up. They had live reports from all the big gun stores, and a few articles in the paper. Very, very biased towards the anti-gun movment.

The media is propagating a bunch of lies about this matter, e. g. "for the first time in ten years people will be able to purchase AK-47s, Uzis, and Tec9s" as if these types and others were totally banned from being sold. As we all know, any of these semi-autos could be *legally* purchased under the AWB, including the aforementioned models, along with 'pre-ban' hi-cap mags, if one was willing to pay the higher price. It was strictly about cosmetics.

And with regard to the media propagating a bunch of lies, there is absolutely no law that requires the media to be truthful. Indeed, an appeals court has ruled that the media is not required to present the truth, and that lying is 'protected speech. ' Please refer to this article for more info on this distressing issue - http://www.rense.com/general35/MEDIA.HTM

And to add insult to injury, Bush's secret society pal Kerry came out in the media claiming that "now terrorists will be able to walk into gun stores and buy (those dreaded and evil) assault weapons. " This appears to me to be an admission that the NICS is a complete waste of time if NICS is not able to stop "terrorists" from buying 'assault weapons' through gun stores.

A good point but please no politics. Thanks.

It's not about 'politics', it's about getting lied to. And Bush and Kerry being tight in the secret society know as 'Skull and Bones' (a well known elitist death cult) isn't a matter of 'politics' neither, it is simply a fact.

You know how to tell if a politican is lying to you? His lips are moving.

Some folks have been fed such a steady diet of lies the truth distresses them.

Very true but I would like the thread to run it's course without being locked or creating any dissention. I already got my hand slapped for defending my political stance over here.

I have a thread going in the political forum if you would like to state your political feelings:

BTW, I voted 'don't care' in the poll because all this sunsetting does anyway is to set the stage for 'the next step' in gun control that will come about in the next year or so after a few more staged shootings where 'assault weapons' are used. The fix is in. Even your favorite national politican has come out and said he is in favor of the outright banning of hi-cap mags (in his last campaign). (Fact, NOT 'politics')

As Mao correctly observed, "Political power comes from the barrel of a rifle" if you catch my drift.
