I need to get this done, and need to know if there is some kind of special way to go about pulling the center piece off to get to the pieces that make contact for the horn to honk. . help me out guys!

Not sure about the horn contacts specifically, but I've had the whole wheel, airbag, etc. out of mine and I think the first step is to remove the screws on the backside (actually front ) of the steering wheel.

Make sure you disarm the airbag by disconnecting the ground cables on BOTH batteries at least 2 minutes before tinkering with the steering wheel. This is from the '06 FSM.

Not sure if it is me, but there are no screw holes on the back side of my steering wheel... . Mine is an 04. 5... Does anyone know if the wheel is a different design??? Help!!

-Chris-

While we are talking steering wheels,I have a clicking clunk sound when turning the wheel. sounds to be just behind the wheel under the plastic cover. Anyone had this on a 2gen. wheel has never been off ,everthing work steering box is tight . ??

Chris:

The FSM for the 04 gives what appears to be the ssame instructions for removing the cover (airbag).

They both indaicate screws that are removed from the underside of the wheel.

"(1) Disconnect and isolate the battery negative

cable. Wait two minutes for the system capacitor to

discharge before further service.

(2) From the underside of the steering wheel,

remove the two screws that secure the driver airbag

to the steering wheel armature (Fig. 23).

(3) Pull the driver airbag away from the steering

wheel far enough to access the three electrical connections

on the back of the airbag housing (Fig. 24).

(4) Disconnect the steering wheel wire harness

connector for the horn switch from the horn switch

feed pigtail wire connector, which is located on the

back of the driver airbag housing

(5) The clockspring driver airbag pigtail wire connectors

are secured by integral latches to the airbag

inflator connector receptacles, which are located on

the back of the driver airbag housing. Depress the

latches on each side of the connector insulator and

pull the insulators straight out from the airbag inflator

to disconnect them from the connector receptacles.

(6) Remove the driver airbag from the steering

wheel"

Don't know what else to tell you.

try to look at it from the backsside of the wheel. I think you'll see some deep, round holes that have a screwheads at the bottom.

yeah, call me stoooopid. . they are there, I was just looking in the wrong spots... NOW... one more question... can you bend back the pieces that make contact for the horn, or do you have to replace them altogether??

-Chris-

Ok, I have gotten this off now, but now I am sitting here with the airbag module and trying to figure out how to get to the metal pieces that make contact for the horn to honk... how the heck do you get to them????
