planning on buying an afe stage 2 intake for my new 6. 7, i was just looking arround at it last nite and cant figure out how the heck that ring comes off this new turbo. #@$%!

I have seen many sig's for 07. 5 trucks that say ring mia... so how did you do it?

I would buy the intake first and install it then listen to it before you take the Ring out. It may be enough for you with out having to yank out the ring. Once you take it out its out for good.

Why in the world would anyone want to remove the silencer ring? I doubt the manufacturer would bother to include a fine machined part in the turbo without good reason. I am sure their R&D budget is much bigger than any one of ours. I am an engineer, but I won't re-engineer my truck. My 2 cents.

judging by your signature, you've already started re-engineering your truck's suspension... I'm pretty sure their R&D budget is bigger than yours... I mean, everyone knows that OEM's never skimp on anything and that the entire populace of the earth shares exactly the same tastes, and they all want exactly the same thing out of their vehicles. That's why these trucks are perfect straight from the factory, and there's never a need to modify them in any way/shape/form.

Well said... I agree!

I'm curious... why are you paying $30/yr for a membership to this website if you never plan on modifying your truck? all you need is a Dodge repair manual and you're all set.

you agree with him, yet he has alread modified his truck beyond the factory parameters

In my mind, there's a big difference between doing some mods on suspension and making changes to components of the turbo on a first year engine. There's an obvious difference in technical sophistication and sensitivity to tinkering between the two--the suspension isn't controlled by an ECM with 100K parameters in it nor does it spin at 100,000 rpm at variable geometries. To me that's just common sense.

I don't know what a turbo silencer ring is--I'm a first time owner of a CTD. I'm thinkin' the people who designed the turbo and the truck put this component in there for a reason... kinda have to trust Cummins on that. As for my truck: the turbo ring stays in... but I may add a cold air intake and a few little accessories down the road. Don't have time to tinker with the $32K truck I depend on every day to get me to work.

When the kids are grown and I'm retired from the Air Force, maybe I'll have time to mod trucks and tinker with internal engine parts. By that time, though, diesel will be $18/gallon, RVs will be illegal, and my wife and I will be going camping in a tent with our Prius. :{

I pay $30 a year because TDR is the best place I've seen to learn more about my truck and share in an online community of other CTD owners. Unlike other (free) sites, most people on TDR are more into talkin' trucks than talkin' trash. And last time I checked, a service manual from Chrysler for my truck runs around $300... that's 10 years of TDR!! :-laf

the turbo silencer ring is just that... a silencer. We've been removing them since they started using them in 1994.

On HY35 equipped trucks that had been turned up, removing the ring will actually help alleviate surging issues

it's purely an asthetic thing... like chrome door handles. if you like it quiet? fine, if you like it noisy? fine. zero adverse effect

I agree w/ you on the membership fee, worth every penny.

The ring is put in a holset charger ONLY for a dodge application from what i understand, if i wanted a lecture on why not to mess arround with it i would have asked my mother.

If you dont have any knowledge on engines or trucks dont post in this thread. i just want to know how, or who has removed one.

The ring is for Dodge only, it controls turbo noise but also has an affect on airflow. Mine is still on, I would say on the 6. 7 remove at your own risk as I am not sure the gain/loss you would experience.

I dont think it has any affect on airflow. I removed mine 10,000 miles ago and no performance gains no loss just a louder whining turbo especially with a S&B Intake. To date I have had zero problems with the truck with 13k miles. I got mine out with my tire iron that comes with the truck. :)

it has no effect on airflow... like I said, on a combo that's really prone to surging/huffing (like a warmed over HY equipped truck) pulling the silencer ring allows the MWE slot to actually do what it's designed to do

This seems like the right thread to ask this. Is there any way to get a little more turbo noise by reming something in the intake tube. I was looking around at some other forums and a guy hinted that he has removed a plastic piece from it and got a litte more turbo whistle. I just can't bring my self to snap something off a brand new turbo. I took the one out of my 02 but no big deal you just pop it back in.

Please utilize the search feature or you may experiance "Foot 'n Mouth" syndrome when posting.

The Silencer ring has been researched and researched, and experimented with. CNC Parts have been made, extensive boost and vacuum pressures have been measured, even dyno testing has been done.

It's like a volume knob. Would you like loud with your turbo? Sure, just enable it by removing the silencer ring.

No I don't think I will have foot in mouth sydrome. I have read every thread in the 6. 7 forum on this. And maybe I didn't make this clear I wasn't asking about taking the silencer ring out. I was asking if there is a baffel of some kind you can take out of the intake tube!!!!!!!!!!!

Before i got rid of my 6. 7l i bought a afe stage 2 and tried removing the silencer but could not get it out. I tried prying with a pry bar but it looked like the three dowel pins were ready to come out with it,so i decided to just leave it in. There is much more turbo whistle though with the afe stage 2 installed.

I'm pretty sure he was talking to the person who was saying not to mess with the silencer because engineers put it there
