Competition How do you guys leave the line when pulling with a stick?

I have been to some pulls and had a good time but I was wanting to learn more about leaveing the line. I figure I could learn something from the guys who have alot of hooks. Thanks for any info your willing to share.

I leave the line at 3k rpm.

In your case with your drag comp, I would suggest leaving around 3200-3300rpm or whatever you feel comfortable.



I only have only about 10 hooks, but also one win and a 2nd place.



Just take it up to the desired rpm, there is no "brake" pedal involved.

Slowly start letting the clutch pedal out then when you feel it start to grab keep letting it out and once you feel the tires start going go ahead and ease it out the rest of the way, then stab it to the floor!!

Make sure to adjust throttle to keep that launch engine speed up, so you dont die on the line.

Just try to do this without burning up your clutch (read too much slipping, too much boost etc. ).

You might try 4 Lo, 4th gear. Another choice could be 2nd Hi or 3rd Hi.



Its really not hard to do. But it does make you nervous!

Wow - 3rd hi? Seems like a really high gear unless your truck is pushing a ton of power. How much power would you say you need to launch in 3rd hi?

Not a pro but with the old truck (440hp 12v 3. 55 5sp) I used 4low and 3rd on hard tracks and 4th on loose. Never won jack but I had a lot of fun. I also had little girl tires on the truck, If you have anything thats going to hook up I would stay in 4lowx3rd. Unless your truck a LOT of power these are good gears. Make shure your chain is tight and rev it up ot 2500-3000 and gently let the clutch out. Then HAMMER DOWN BIG BOY>

Remember he has a 6 speed.

4th low at a minimum!

I'd stay away from 3rd hi. Usually either 4th low, 2nd hi or 5th low on a loose track - that is with a 6 speed. I was taught to get the slack out(give it one last little bump just before you really get after it, and keep it there with the clutch, sometimes the truck rolls back a few inches after setting the chain the first time), put the smoke pedal on the mat, and bring the clutch out at a pace to keep the rpms up. Don't want to drag it out too long but shouldn't dump it either. Depends on track and gear and tires. You can feel it. I'm no expert, but I've had some decent hooks and some bad ones, so I know what its like to make a wrong decision.

I hope with that 6in lift and those 37s that you have some serious traction/ladder bars, if not say good buy to your yoke and or gears in the rearend.
