Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) How Do You Know?

My 99 has displayed check engine for 5000 miles. A mach told me it was the smog and not to worry as they don't check smog in ca. I finally went to AutoZone and read the code. Yep P0216.

The truck runs great,15 to 19 mpg on Ca diesel. Every thing is great. What I want to know is how does the vp44 let you down, is there any warning or does it just happen???

are you running a fuel pressure guage? The pump can fail with very little warning.
