Belgium Browning 9mm

thought id see what you guys prefer or use for power equipment... i own a Stihl 044 and 019 and love them! what do you guys use for your wood cutting fun?

Stihl 032AV

I have a Stihl 032AV. Bought it in 1982, runs excellent and has been used a fair amount. I'm particular about it and always do the maintainence at the end of a cutting session so it'll be ready to go next itme I need it.

I also have an old small Homelite XL that I bought in 1978 when we purchased our first home. It's finicky about which bar oil you use and is not running all that great right now. I'm seriously thinking about another light weight saw for limbing, pruning etc. to replace the Homelite and I'm pretty sure it would be a Stihl. Just my 2 cents.

I run a Stihl 036 Pro. I was trimming branches back from my roof on my house a few years ago and set it down while it was idling and it vibrated off the roof and hit the ground still running. about a 15 foot drop. I took it in to have it checked and they found nothing wrong.

Craftsman 55CC 20" saw that is 6 years old now and still is a touch fussy when cold. WOT and it bogs (Sounds like a main jet) But man when it is mid - rip there ain't no stoppin' it!

MS 290 STIHL Farm Boss with a 16" bar that is flat out my bestest buddy! In fact I use it for making nice 45* miter cuts on 8X8 Ties and high trimming. Light and a ton of power. This guy is about 4 years old now and doesn't show a day older

had my 18" poulan wild thing about 6 years now and like it, not sure how it would do under serious all winter heat the house use but it handles whatever i throw at it, plenty of power and it starts by the 3rd pull after storage

I have a Stihl 360 pro that has been awesome. We bought some property in 99 that was heavily treed but just needed a bit of trimming for a few dead ones and some downed stuff. Bought a craftsman 44cc at the time thinking I would not need a better/heavier duty saw. Well the darn pine beetles ravaged the area several years ago and the craftsman couldnt take the use. Lost 99% of our pines. Thank goodness there is some cedar on the property as well. I still have it and it still mostly runs, put a 16 inch bar on it to limb with it but it can barely do that anymore. The stihl on the other hand has cut down at least 3000 trees from 2" - 36" diameter. Cuts as good as the day I bought it. Only another 3-4000 to go. Anybody need free firewood?

I have 2 a Homelite 330 w/ a 20 inch bar and a Homelite super 2 w/ a 16 inch bar, both are 25 years old. They have been great, both used alot in 7 of those 25 years. The important thing about chain saws is to buy the right size, don't buy a limbing and trimming saw and expect it to hold up if you're dropping large trees. On the other hand, buying a large saw and using it for trimming will wear you out. Lastly, don't loan them out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Make your own?

I use a Stihl 028 Wood Boss made back in the 1980's in "West Germany". It will always start on the 2nd or 3rd pull even after not being run for some time. It is nicely balanced and more than powerful enough for my needs. I highly recommend Stihl whenever people ask, especially their German-made saws.

Husqvarna P280, 24" bar and a chain with about 1 tooth/inch. Cuts a 30" trunk in about the same number of seconds. Its scary fast/powerful and not tempermental. I'm petrified of it.

I've always had Great luck with My Husky Rancher.

Always starts on the second or third pull even aftyer sitting for the winter.

All Husky's from small to x-large for commercial trees. Plus I carry an Echo top hand for the climbing part. Use to carry a Husky for climbing, but an unfortunate lack of grip @ 80 feet caused me to drop it. No it didn't survive. Cheaper to replace the Echo if it falls. Though no mishaps in the last three years. Won't knock stihl too much. Just don't like them. Too much like Dodge vs. everybody else. Homeowners models . . . . . I'd still buy a Husky or similar and not from a box store. Find a good private saw shop and go from there. Sore subject with me and Husky and box stores.

Stihl 028 Wood Boss

Bought new in '83 (?) for about $160-170. It has cut TONS of wood in it's life. I used to heat my homes with firewood up until about a few years ago - went with a gas insert (blasphemy, sacrilege, heresy, etc. ). In 2003, hurricane Isabel cleared out over 30 tall trees on my lot, most over 100'. I kept 3 chains in constant rotation between cutting, dull, and getting sharpened. The saw needed a TLC session at the local dealer after all that treefall had been cleaned up. Runs great - very reliable and strong.

Stihl 029 "Farm Boss". I have had it at least 8 years and love it. 18" bar and original spark plug and air filter! Always reliable and starts on the 3rd or 4th pull after sitting half a year with skunky gas!

Not sure about their chain saws, but I have been THRILLED with my Echo weed whacker and leaf blower.

I went into the store 25 years ago and asked for the cheapest saw that they nevr saw come back broken. I got a McCullouch (sp) Mac 10-10 Automatic. I wore out 3 bars and chains. Still runs great, cut a lot of wood. It was parked for 10 years and started on the third pull.

I have a Poulan (Pro - whatever that means... haha) 4218.

42cc

18" bar

It leaks bar/chain oil when you leave it sitting, but the thing has a LOT of power (I've never had to use more than 3/4 throttle even on 24" + diameter logs) and it was cheap to buy. I don't think I've burned more than 2 gallons of gas through the thing and it has been a very good little saw.

If I had to count on a saw for work or if I used it more than maybe once every 2 years, I'd look at a Stihl.

Stihl 039 which is now the 390 I guess, I've had it for about 13 years and it's been a great saw. I bought one of those Stihl 4-stroke weed wackers this year just because the saw has been so good.

I used to work for my uncles firewood business in high school which enabled me to get more experience than I ever wanted with various Stihl chainsaws (032, 036, 038, 044). My personal favorite was the 036 with a 20" bar. Used to cut through pine, aspen, and scrub oak like butter and wasn't as bulky as the 038 or 044. My uncle bought a new one for me at the age of 14 and I had it until I went away to college at 18. He doesn't have the business anymore but does still have saw and it still runs like new (Started it about two weeks ago while I was visiting) Good saws...
