Yep, and it has no cover over the top of it and doesn't respond well to being hosed down. :(

One more reason not to start drinking till 12:00pm:p

I stopped at a motorcycle dealership, and on the shelf with all the oil, waxes and cleaners I found a product that works great, is safe on aluminum, clear coat, plastic, chrome, rubber it is called ProtectAll All-Surface Care. www.protectall.com

You may want to give it a try. :)

Castrol super clean took the clear paint off my valve cover and now it looks like crap!  Guess I'll have to get a red one! Been using simple green since, one thing to remember is that it is highly concentrated and can be diluted. I've always driven it after cleaning to dry everything, then spray a light coat of WD-40 on everything. I got super clean on my silencer ring and muffler and had to do away with them too :D :D :D .

Silicone is not a problem! The ISB does not have an O2 sensor (yet). Silicone spray CAN be used on our trucks!

Simple Green works , but is slightly basic

Castrol Super Clean is some caustic I TRIED TO BY-PASS THE CUSSING FILTER... . ever get it in a cut?

Straight DI water with a nonionic surfactant or IPA works great... just make sure you rince it all off and the engine is cool when you do it.

I use Castrol ONLY on my Line-X'd rocker pannels, this stuff is so nasty that it eats the dirt right out of the pores.

clean engine?

i agree with simple green . my truck has 170000km. (106000mi) engine compartment looks like new. wax the valve cover. :D

I use Simple Green as well... Evan turned me on to this..... before, I had always been a firm believer of periodic wiping, cleaning and detailing of the engine compartment... hey, what the. . I still do that.:eek::D

For the wheel liners, suspension components and frame I use Griot's Garage (www.griotsgarage.com) Undercarriage Spray... works fantastic! (BTW, I removed all the factory stickers applied to the frame :D )

The (underhood) chrome and paint get waxed, the aluminum and stainless steel get polished, the rubber hoses get cleaned and protected with 303 Protectant.

I too use Simple Green under the hood. An encounter with Super Clean took the paint off my new Targetmaster 350 in my Blazer a few years ago.

The only thing I use Super-Clean for is, it's great for making old tires that have that brown look from ArmorAll, look like new. It also removes the muddy film off of tires and fenderwells very well.

It also kills the crabs:eek:, at least that's what I was told.

Simple Green

I've used "simple green" every month or two on my '99 for over two years and 40K miles. I travel highways and dusty dirt roads and everyone remarks how clean the engine is... Just be careful when rinsing electrical and electronic areas. After rinsing, I always run mine warm with the hood closed to dry it off. That moves a lot of warm, dry air. Keep it clean!! :D :D :D

John, I know you are a rolling advertisement for Griot's :D

Just wondering if you had tried any of their engine cleaner?? I have used it and it seems to work OK, and like most of their stuff it smells good too :)

Shelby....heads up

I agree with John on the Griots undercarriage spray, but it will run, so I use a large sponge applicator to smooth it out.

As stated earlier, I never had to use cleaners on my engines because I never let it get away from me.

I did use Griot's Engine Gloss on my former very bombed 97 Dakota, and was very disappointed. It left a shelak (can't figure out the spelling) look... . looked cheap. Really messed up the look of my very expensive MSD plug wires, and they never "recovered"... . you can't get this stuff off once sprayed, and over time it looked even worse.

Joe,

I agree on the engine gloss. You find this type of stuff on a lot of used cars at dealers. Looks sharp for about a month, then downhill from there. I don't think I have done any damage with the engine cleaner, but was wondering how it stacked up against simple green.

Griot's stuff is spendy. I have a friend who used to work for them, and he gave me several gallons of the undercarriage spray, car wash, Best of Show wax a Boars Hair Brush, and a set of Hella horns.

I really like the car wash and Boars Hair Brush. The horns are a cheaper alternative to Grovers and Hadleys, but not really that great... certaintly not worth the $$. The Best of Show wax doesn't impress me.

The Boars Hair Brush I've used for over two years, and it is really a high quality brush. Really great and fast to take off most of the dirt and follow-up with the wash mitt when your truck is real dirty. After much use it's still like new. $69. 95 is obscene, but to get real boars hair that's what you're up against. I actually would buy another if I needed one.
