How do you time a cummins?

I replaced the injection pump gear and now its hard to start and when it does start alot of white smoke.

The gear went on in the same place as the old gear. Do I need to adjust the pump now?

If its your 06 your talking about timeing is controlled by the ecm, and can be tweeked by electronics or sensor mods/tone ring mods. I don't believe there is any pump timeing to be done on 3rd gens.

If it's on the 1st gen, then you need a dial indicator that's used to set the plunger lift at #1 TDC. Timing is adjusted by rotating the pump on the gearcase.



If it's on the 3rd gen, then something else is going on as the CP3 pump has nothing to do with the timing. All it provides is fuel pressure and volume, the timing is done by the ECM.
