Typicaly if I don't see any oil leaks that need to be addressed then yes, I do jig it. If you hit the pin while drilling then go to plan B and tab. The jig is adequate otherwise.



SShiel, a hairline crack is probably no cause for alarm. It may just be a casting line, those are common. As for the gasket, if it is stuck well to one side or the other you can get away with reusing it but clean it up well and use silicone on the side that came loose.

It seems like yours would be the same as a 97 5-sp. I take the fan off with the big left handed thread nut and drop it out the bottom. I have done this a few times changing fan clutches. It won't work on an auto trans truck because of the cooler lines.
 
How come no-one followed the TST instructions and removed the 4 bolts that hold the fan on? It takes about 5 minutes to remove it and the shroud as one piece.
 
Well no-one has the TST instructions that say that. It only tells you to remove the four fan bracket bolts. Page 2; step 7.

getting the washer resovoir off is always a pain for me... it's easier to just remove the fan IMHO
