Right up untill Dec. 7, 1941 when the Japs bombed our base a Pearl Harbor, It was not possible for our President and his administration to openly prepare for war because of the rabid anti-war sentiment in much of the country. There was great hugh and cry that the "war mongers" were simply trying to get into the war in Europe that did not concern us so the "fat cat" corporations could line their pockets.
Roosevelt (and most any thinking person) could see that war was going to be forced upon us, but still the anti's made such a clamor that we could not openly prepare and had to be caught virtually flat footed----------
Great parallels to the fuss Bush has/is dealing with in World War III with terror.
For anyone interested there is a book written by the first head of British intelligence (last name Stephenson), about the problems the British and Roosevelt had trying to meaningfully get the U. S. geared up to face the near certain threat from the Japanese and Germany.
The book title is "Man Called Intrepid". Intrepid was Stephenson's code name . He wrote the book in the "60s, after the British documents of the time were declassified, and the book contains verbatim copies of many of the communications between Roosevelt and Churchill dealing with the terrible problem Roosevelt had trying to get us somewhat ready for the impending war over the ravings of those who where sure it was a plot to fatten to pockets of corporate crooks.
Its really chilling to note the similiarities between the anti war nuts then and now. Those who do not know/understand history just keep making the same old blunders over and over. Had we entered ww II about three years earlier, we could have contained Hitler with far fewer casualties and far less cost and the Japanese would never haver perceived us weak enough to challenge us by bombing Pearl. Just as had we aggressively gone after the terrorist a couple years earlier, we would not have sufferred 9-11, And God help us if we do not follow through on the war on terror now.
