How does stock turbo (2005) lag compare with high performance turbo systems?

Just got a 2005 TDR, and I love it. Of course the power comes on a fraction of a second later after you punch it. I'm wondering (because I've heard it both ways) is this lag more than some of the singles (like I guess a 62-14, or other upgraded turbo) or is the stock turbo set up so that most other high performance turbo can't compare to the small lag of a stock system? I'm not talking about the actual power, but the 'lag' aspect. I understand that a well setup set of twins has low lag-is it lower than stock?

Thanks in advance, I'm learning a lot reading through everybodys posts!

It's a automatic, 17000 miles and I can't wait (although I'm waiting now for gauges in mail) to hop it up.

Stock turbos blow, especially on 05's it seems (see sig) read Joe Donnellys article in the back of your most recent TDR, that mans a genius and he says it better than me... ... Welcome my friend and enjoy you CTD???

I don't know what to tell ya. I swear my new turbo spools quicker than my stocker did. I don't know why or how but it sure does.

I am definitely going to get a SMARTY, I'm waiting for my Quadzilla controller (gauges) in the mail now. So it makes turbo lag minimal or eliminates it-that's good news! Means I can get a bigger (laggier) turbo (would that be a silver bullet? I know that's a pretty BIG turbo) and still have similar to stock lag (which isn't too bad, I'm really liking driving it, specially when it's wet-it spins tires easily)

Thanks for the advice, I got the 05 Dodge in part because of reading the posts here, and liked the engine before I even drove it.

I haven't got a magazine yet, callled TDR today, they said it should be out I think next few days. I'll read that article you recc'd, Smokin, gotta get up to speed on the past TDR articles.

Also made up mind to probably use Gorends Bros. transmission, because of so many recc's here.

Hey, another question (if anybody is still reading this post) I gotta warranty still, is there a turbo like 62/14 that bolts on (and off) easily so I can get more air without TOO much trouble changing back for servicing? I think I'll leave Quadzilla Commander on cause I'll have to plug ex. manifold for EGT if I take it off, but how hard is it to change a turbo if you don't have to mess with exhaust? Do some turbos just replace stock setup?

Guess I'll do some more searching of past threads, like the Beatles said, everything you do has already been done.

Thanks for the advice!

I don't think this works like you are thinking.

You HAD a warranty.

Thats not turbo lag, its fuel management. The fuel is ramped up after the boost hits 12 psi and then again at 1800 rpm's. A 60 cm wheel on a 10 cm housing spools pretty good when you can get the fuel to it.

Remove part of the fuel management and lag is almost non-existent. Remove all of it and the turbo will be non-existent. :-laf

You may want to be careful with a Silver Bullet. I went the route I did because I'm shooting for anything over 500. With a little more fuel from something like a Smarty I should be there pretty easy. I didn't want to go as far as modified CP3, injectors, studs, fire rings, etc. so I will settle for under 600. There is a big jump to 600 and I'm just not willing to do it. The Silver will need studs at the least and I'm not sure if you could get enough fuel in there for it without some serious mods to the fuel system. You don't want to upgrade past your means right off the bat. I went the HTB62 route for price and I can upgrade it to a 66 if I need/want to later and still keep the boost under 50 PSI for my headgasket life and be content but 45 out the 62/14 is a 1:1 drive ratio and is still looking decent in the map for that compressor. Altitude throws me a little but not bad. I have some other things on my truck that help like manifolds and 5" exhaust along with a lot of intake air so I should be covered. A dyno run and time will tell for sure. I tow a lot and at high altitude here in MT so surge was a big concern for me as well. If you don't tow much then that may be a favorable point for going a little bigger starting out.

A turbo swap is not too bad once you remove the stocker and configure the botl layout on the lower manifold mount. The stocker is a pain to get out the first time but once you get past the rear/inner studs it isn't too bad with two guys, one working from the bottom with a wobbley. Some guys take off the stock manifold which is what I did because I was putting an ATS on anyway but it is a little heavier and a little harder for one guy to try and line back up upon install. Taking it out is a little easier but it's a little heavy nonetheless. I don't now how pratical it is to R&R turbos everytime you need service work. I bought my truck over 2 years ago and haven't been back to the dealer since. My warranty was shot a long time ago though. :-laf
