That thread explains the make-up of the system, but doesn't get into the big differences which are:



Quietness: with the "older", standard injectors, a metered amount of fuel is "loaded" into each injector, and blown into the cylinder all at once, giving the classic diesel "hammer". The comon rail gives much more flexibility. There is now a pilot injection, which gets things hot in the cylinder, then the main load can dump in. Gives a "softer" hit (thus, quieter). Also, starting with the 600 engine, there is also a post-event to burn-off any remaining stuff.



Emmisions are also much improved because the events can be varied much easier for various operating conditions.
