I'm picking up my 02 DRW with NV5600 next week.
I understand the brakes are not the best on the 2cnd Gen trucks.
The EB on my 16 Aisin is amazing and saves a lot of wear on my brakes and will hold my RV on hills by itself.
How effective are the aftermarket EBs with the 5600 and will it be close to the 16?
What are the better EBs to consider for an 02?

I actually think the Banks EB on our 2001.5/47RE did a better job than the one on the new 2015/Aisin does. SNOKING

I have a BD exhaust brake on my 02 with the NV5600. Finally did my first set of brakes at 205,000 miles.
The pads were still in excellent shape but the salt from the winters started to take some toll.

Towing the trailer it had no problem keeping me from having to use the service brake.
Driving from Carson City to Sacramento via Hwy 88 (peak elevation 8000ft) I never have to touch the brakes as long as no one is in front of me.
It works really well with the 6 speed manual.

I have an 01 with NV 5600 and a BD Exhaust brake, I got it with 169 k now has 249 k and still has the brakes that where put on just before the EB. As stated above no need for the service brakes. Pick the right gear, and no one going slower.

My '01 had a PacBrake with the 5600 and it worked as well as the '13 does. The one I had on the '96 was a little weaked, but never had the 60 lb exhaust springs installed.

I've had a Pacbrake on my truck for the last 80k miles or so. OEM front brakes had 115k miles on them with about 1/4" of pad material left. Obviously the EB was the reason too.

An EB is a very effective tool and should be mandatory in order to tow with a diesel truck. I've experienced the white knuckle downhill ride towing without an exhaust brake and I'll never tow without one again.

What brand EB you choose is up to you. Having people say their "X" brand EB is best is usually pointless as not too many people have had more than one EB on their truck so whats their basis.

That said, I understand the VGT exhaust brake is more effective than the butterfly valve EB's but I cant confirm or deny that. This information came from other forum members who've swapped out the HX35 for a VGT on their 2nd gen truck. :)

Thanks for the great info. Looks like it will be worth adding an EB.
I use mine all the time on the 16. Turn it on and set the tow/haul mode and I pretty much only use the service brakes below about 20 mph.
Leaving tomorrow so should be able to give the old girl a good shake down drive by Sat.

Just so you know, I dont believe there are any 2nd gen EB's which are capable of doing some of the additional fancy features the newer gen trucks have. Unless something changed, I believe all that the 2nd gens are capable of is plugging into the ECM for throttle on/off control and a manual on/off switch in the cab. The newer gens will do some cool things like auto shut off the EB as the vehicle slows and have a warm up feature dependent on coolant temp too. I may be wrong too so make sure you check all the brands out before you buy.

My Banks 2nd gen EB had a warm up feature to 140 degrees coolant temp, turned off at around 18 MPH, worked seamlessly with the cruise control and braked very well. Was actually more predictable vs the 2015's. Snoking

Only problem was, warm up, cold weather high idle and kicking into 3 cylinder idle! A Cummins will die in it's tracks in 3 cylinder idle against an EB, even in high idle!:eek::eek:

Happen snowmobiling in Eastern Washington, staying in a motel over night with 5° in the morning. "Snoking" was a off shoot of finding good snow to ride on.
