You didn't try to counting the rpm ? before you posted, I am shocked. . lol It spins way fast that is why the balance is very important.

Got this info from dodgeram.org

From the Holset Turbocharger Fundamentals page:

As you put your foot on the accelerator the wheel starts spinning faster. Small Turbos (e. g. Holset H1C's or HX35's) can spin at up to 140,000 rpm, that's 2333 revs per second or over 2000 km per hour.

MY03 and beyond run about 51 in hg. boost at rated power and up to about 120,000 rpm at rated and altitude. Cruise speed turbo rpm closer to 60-70K.

The VGT on the Texas Tornado has a speed sensor and I've seen upwards of 160k. The engineer @ Holset that I've talked with, tells me that's 30k above max speed for their containment ( huffing) test.

What's the outer diameter of the compressor wheel on an HY35? I'm wondering if the blade tips are supersonic at full RPM.

Depends on Altitude, fuel rate and load.

As I recall on a normal empty run the average turbo turns fast.

Under a heavy load with excess fuel and high altitude the turbo will spin VERY FAST!!
