Boy....that's my experience also. I was told by a couple of shops I needed a new ECM but my current shop (Diesel Specialists in Las Vegas) checked my wiring harnesses and found multiple broken conductors and after conductor-repairs, the ECM was fine after all.

I've been there... my ECM died too. I wound up ordering a reman one from flagship one. It took a while for it to arrive, but the truck fired right up. I have a million codes, but those are real as far as I can tell and I'm working on solving them as I restore the truck.

Wiring Harnesses must be a "big business now"... The "Autocomputerspecialist" website has changed since I purchased an ECM from them in Dec 2019. I can't find "new" replacement ECMs, just Repair services and now Harness rebuilding is featured prominently. I've fixed wires in my doors, but never imagined wire would just break going to the Transmission in only 168K miles. Too many Transmission repairs (seem to be every other year almost...)

While inspecting a warehouse that was for sale here in Las Vegas last year, I met the buyer, Jorge. He is the owner of Auto Dynamic Services and specializes in automotive electrical diagnostics and programming. Among other things, they handle ECU diagnostics, repairs and programming. It was about that time that I had a local shop handle some ECU wiring repairs on my 2004 so I was interested in whether or not he could reflash my truck's ECU if I ever had problems with it. He said he could...so I asked him what made him so sure...and he said the bulk of his business came from local car/truck dealerships that had customer ECU problems they couldn't resolve and would bring him in to handle repairs & reflashing. His business is only about 6-7 years old and he's growing rapidly....so it appears he's good at what he does. If you're in the Vegas area and need his ECU expertise... go to autodynamicservices.com and get his number and give him a call.....and tell him 'the inspector' sent you. It's always good to have choices...yes?
NOTE: At the time I spoke with him he said he did NOT do any mail-order work....but who knows....that could change at any time.

Thanks for the info!
Its still is hard for me to believe that 3 ECMs have been in my truck. But maybe no more worse than the 4 Radios I've been through in the now 180K miles on my 05. Gosh I wish I had a newer truck with even more electronics, touch screens, and emissions stuff!.....

And don't forget the Hoovering up of all your personal data, where and how you drive, music you listen to, and probably even data off your phone, too if it's paired with your vehicle. I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop when dealers start denying warranty repairs right and left based on the data they collect both through connectivity and when they plug in when you bring in your vehicle. At some point it will get on the radar of news organizations and become a news story. I just talked to a friend this morning who told me that he got jammed up on his insurance because in Texas insurance companies now have online access to your inspection report. He was driving more miles than what they thought, so they stuck it to him.
