Can anyone tell me how difficult it is to replace the 5th gear shaft? Is this the only way to fix thr 5th gear falloff? I am going to help my bro-in-law replace his clutch over Christmas and since he has had the nut fall off twice we are going to fix it right. Is it a major job to do this? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I would like to know also......

I was going to try the "upgraded "nut fix, but I don't want to just be wasting my time. I do not need to have the transmission out for any other reason at this time. My Fifth gear nut has not failed yet, but ..... when, one never knows.

I just got through replacing one in a 98. I wouldn't say it was really difficult because I did it but it does require a couple special tools and a service manual is very helpful.

Basically you have to disassemble most of the transmission because this is the "mainshaft" your replacing here. I put new bearings and syncros in the one I did because I was there and it had 100k on it. Not knowing really what I was doing it took me about 12 hours.

I bought my parts from Standard Transmission and Gear and was happy with their stuff. The new mainshaft had a groove cut around it with a pair of locking keys and a ring to hold them in. I don't see any way that gear is gunna slide off now. Hope this helps.
