hello, i have called my local injection pump place to find out how to make my 96 215p pump turn more rpm's, they said they didnt replace springs, instead they pull the pump and do benchwork to it... and the price of just pulling the pump and reinstalling it is 480. 00... . ... . i know you can buy gov springs for this pump... the question is... how hard are they to install with a average do it yourself mechanic? any suggestions will be appreciated... thanks

The job is somewhat exacting but not brain surgery. If you get the springs from PDR you get fairly detailed instructions with them. Browse their web site and review the instructions before you order. I found it fairly easy to go through the side after removing the fender liner. That way you eliminate the chance of dropping anything into the pump. Search TDR on "GSK" and you'll get a lot of info. Use your own good judgement on what to accept and what to take with a grain of salt. Read the PDR section about Gov. Lever Adjustment too.

The job is not too hard so long as you follow the directions and have long blade screwdrivers or the correct spanner tool to unscrew the locks. Most importantly, drop any shims into the governor housing. When using a magnet to lift the springs, it is easy for a shim under a spring to come up and then fall off into the pump housing. You might not notice it happen. Be sure to account for all springs, shims, and seat parts before and after the work, and to re-install the idle spring if you go from the top and put it aside, for access to the inner springs. Commonly, the idle spring is moved to the very back of the housing and you sure don't want to forget it there.

Pretty easy, but very easy to get adjusted wrong. Buy 3k from Piers, Study instructions, Then call Piers tech guys if anything looks creepy. Only one click=1/4 turn of adjustment is all it takes for the truck not to run properly.
