ok so how hot does your exhaust have to be in order for it to ignite you know like when the big pulling tractors take off and theres that little flame from their stack well how hot is that cause me and my cuz where running my truck around HARD!!! and i had my head out the window on the right side(he was driving) and i noticed a pretty good little orange glow coming from inside the stack wan't shooting out but it was glowing red in there like the flame was further down the pyro read 850 i belive but idk how acurate it is anyways just wanting to know if any of the big pullers have noticed what temp that happens at



also remember this is a ways down the pipe since it runs up along the bed its not like its coming through the hood from the turbo(which this truck does not have)

I always wondered about this too, especially with stories of the old rigs from '50s and '60s with flames coming out the stacks! Did they have to watch EGT back then or pyros didn't exist?

From a Fire Dept prospective, The particles in Smoke will burn around 1250°

yeah i know the old 2 stroke diesel trucks had as sawyer brown put it theres a flame from the stack and the smokes flowing black as coal but yeah they used to do that when pulling grades and the where heavy footed

We had mirrors on the snoot one each reflecting back to the stacks. That way we could watch and not let the smoke get two thick.



Engine Combustion temp was as important then as it is today as you dont want to melt a piston.



Some say with the oil cooled pistons of today you dont have to worry about temps,, but I still do.

yeah ive heard about the little smoke mirrors and actually one of my big blind mirrors is turned so i can see the smoke i also have a picture of the duel truck and my cousin pointed out the smoke mirror to me when i first got it

Back then, they weren't running turbos so it didn't matter. The stacks would catch on fire in hard pulls with all of the unburned diesel going into the exhaust.

The old non turboed Cummins was capable of setting a six to twelve inch flame out the stack. You could ignite unburned fuel with a little help, maybe a sparkplug drilled in the proper place... .

Years ago I had a 4020 John Deere-It would shoot a 6" flame out the straight pipe. 1200 deg. Installation of turbo took out that little bit of fun at night. .

If you see a flame from that far from the motor it has issues but then again it is a FORD
