Don The stock gauge has six lines. This one comes on at the 3rd from left. Cost about $90 if I remember correctly.

1. I noticed you are running propeylene glycol. Cummins recomends ethelyne glycol only. My experience with propeylene is the it does not transfer heat as well as ethelyene.

2. I have also used Diesel water wetter from Red Line and it does help - if you keep the water/glycol ratio at about 60/40.

3. I also run a Horton fan which has an electric clutch that I can turn on or off as I wish. Just before I hit a hill while towing I turn it on and it moves a ton of air. I might hit 200 on a long or steep hill with everything running. My Horton fan is only on in heavy traffic conditions with, the air on or when towing conditions dictate its use.

4. When my truck was totaled in 2005 I resurected it and in stalled a hood scoop (reversed), another plus to keep temps down. When the fan is on the air that comes out of that scoop is awesome. The only down side of the scoop is in temperatures below 28 degrees when I stop for a light my grid heaters cycle.

5. Another thing I saw years ago was a setup called a "Desert Cooler" which would inject water from a tank to nozzles mounted in front of the radiator. The process of evaporation helped keep the engine cooler. The hotter the outside temp the better it worked.

6. Last but not least my Stage 2 Snow W/M setup with a Stage 3 controller will inject W/M to keep EGTs in check under these conditions.

I had over temp issues a couple of years ago and found the following problems:

1) Radiator tubes plugged with minerals - replaced the radiator.

2) Fan clutch slipping - replaced.

3) A/C Condenser plugged with bug body parts - cleaned it out - this takes a while - and installed a #8 mesh stainless screen behind the grille. Now the bug body parts disintegrate on the screen and can be easily washed off. The screen is about 2" in front of the A/C condenser so air will readily flow to the A/C condenser even if the screen becomes too 'bugged up' before I can get it cleaned.

When / if this fan clutch goes, I will consider electric fans and a cross flow aluminum radiator.

hey Bob, What was the part number on your horton fan setup? I would like to look into that as an option instead of these hardraulic fan cluthes. The big rigs have electric fan clutches...

As I understand it the kit is no longer available. I did run into someone that was able to get the fan and also found someone in Wa State that would custom make a wiring harness. I will however get the original P/N and see if that is a good starting point. I bought mine from Shied Diesel in 1999.

"55... woulnt that be great!

no, i am going way slower than that by the top (more like 40)"

Don, what help does the Gearvendor give you?
I had thought my Motorhome would climb better if I had more gears to play with. I'm dragging a car and using a 4 speed Allison automatic but it seems like I'm in the same situation you are.
I keep telling myself that at 60mph I'm climbing at a mile per minute and at 30mph it's1/ 2 miles per minute (I don't get below 40, but the math is easier at 30mph) and thats not a lot time to lose, and it take's a good hill to do that on an interstate. I keep telling myself... ... ... ... ...
Force my self to let EGT's rule the deal.
Hope to get a water meth at some point but not yet.

Jgolden- 30mph is 1/2mi per minute, or a 2min mile. 120mph is 2mi per minute :-laf. Sorry, just had to correct you, as I could see people more mathematically inclined going Oo. WOW!! about a 120mph motorhome.

If there are 6billion people on the planet, all but a few have better math skills than me. Thanks.
I blame the nuns.
There was a motorhome that went to Bonneville and got 102. 7mph, street legal.
OK, so I'm going up this hill at 120mph... ... .
Thanks, I stand corrrected.

glhs, i think if i do get a napa clutch i will just buy a new one so that if i hate it that much i can put the stock one back on

bob, water transfers heat better than ethyl gly, right? well, i believe propel transfers it better than ethyl as well. i have never tried using water wetter with coolant. i use it when the rules say no antifreeze and only in applications where i want the best heat transer but dont have to worry about boiling over. i dont think this truck of mine would make it over the baker grade with water and water wetter. i like your 'desert cooler' suggestion. wouldnt it work better the lower the humidity was, thats when a swamp cooler works.

jgolden, the gv is awesome. even with 30" tires and 4. 11's the gears werent close enough. when you go to 35's they seem even further apart. i dont know how it would work with your 4 sp auto but with the nv45 4th over to 5th only drops the motor from 1900 to 1800 at 65 mph. if i slow to 60 i go back to 4th over and back to 1800. for the hills it splits 3rd and 4th perfectly. if i get behind a bunch of trucks i can drop to straight 3rd and it helps a lot when accelerating after i get around them. without it when i would shift to 4th the truck couldnt pull it and i would have to down shift back to 3rd. my truck needed the gv to be able to get thru the gears when climbing. and with no trailer 5th over is the only way to fly. it was a lot of money but i think it is worth every penny

it wasnt that hot out when we came back, i think it was 85. the truck got to 230 at the worst point of the climb. guess i will have to live with it.

or maybe if i throw a different turbo on there it will help the h20 temp as well as the egt?
