CT/New England Christmas Cheer...

Okay, we have two choices, well three choices, (no one expects the Spanish Inquisition). They are:

1) Drive straight through. This is about 13hr 30min of driving, plus time for fueling, putting on the feed bag, and 'tinkle time' (there are ladies present). If you really want to be ambitious, pack a cooler and we'll have a contest to see who eats best while in perpetual motion. This calls for an early start, say sometime between 5-7AM in MA to bring our arrival time down to where we don't miss the parking lot meet on Friday night.

2) Break it into a two day trip. Leave Thursday just late enough so as to miss rush hour through Hartford, and drive somewhere between 7 and 10 hours to a stop over where we stay in:

2a) a campsite

2b) a hotel or motel

This will make it easy to make it to the parking lot at a reasonable hour. If we do the camping thing, everyone will need to bring gear, there are some more logistics to coordinate, and we need an alternate plan if it rains.

If we do the motel thing, we need to pick a spot and make reservations. And it costs us more?

What do you all think?

I always have my camping stuff on me when I travel... . just in case. :D

I could use the "CHEAPER" part! :(

I think that I would like to leave on Thursday morning that way we wron't be pushing it.

We're gonna be driving rt 84 to get out of CT right???

Matt,

I really don't care how we go about getting there, as long as we make it for the Friday night dinner/show.

I'm actually hoping that I wouldn't be the only one who would want to drive straight through. Fourteen hours should be a piece of cake, especially in the Cummins.

Well, I guess that answers that. Besides, I'd really hate to have to miss the #$%@ photo shoot!

I'll be talkin to ya soon about it anyway.

What's wrong with this picture? I know I voted for straight through, but we still have only one vote in that category. What button did you press Soldie? Who voted for a hotel stay? I someone coming that I don't know about? Is someone from Texas voting for us? :p

Matt,

I'll tell ya what's wrong with this picture. The vote for straight through included a departure date of Friday. Yes, I will be at the Texas Roadhouse, but this will make getting to Muncie for dinner a little difficult for you if you plan on following me:D !

However, should we depart early Thursday and spend the night somewhere as the vote suggests, then being in Muncie for Friday night is doable. That is why I "pressed" that button. Then again, leaving on Weds, assures this totally... ;)

I don't see leave Thursday afternoon between 3:00 & 6:00pm +/- and either drive straight or stop for a quick nap?

anyway thats what the wife and I, (Lets not forget the GOAT!) are planing to do.

I believe MACTRUCK is in the same?

Any one else??? Oo.

Right, Friday morning early -- do you get a different time to travel than I do, or are you really planning on leaving on Wednesday? I get about 14 hours travel time. Leave at 5AM and get there at 7:pM our time, or 6:pM Muncie time. Or am I figuring wrong?

Last I heard from Mactruck, he was hyped to go camping Thursday night.

If we leave Thursday, I'd like to do at least 7 hours of driving before we call it quits, have dinner, have fun, then turn in.

You do suggest another option, though. That would be to leave on Thursday afternoon and drive through the night. We did that last year, and I got the impression that no one wanted to do that again. Am I wrong?

No Matt, your calculations are correct. However, I personally am leary on cutting it down to the wire like that. Leaving Friday morning early suggests getting to Muncie just in the nick of time for the show. The last time I checked it wasn't a perfect world and I would anticipate at least one traffic slowing accident ( not us of course), perhaps one duece dropping ( that would be us), and about one other unforseen circumstance that would push the trip back just enough so we would miss the good stuff Friday.

I'm up for Thursday morning (I could also leave on Wednesday morning if anyone else is going then).

Leaving on Friday morning and driving straight through is really cutting it close. Plus after driving for 14 hrs are ya really gonna be up to livin it up at the dinner?????

I don't know about most everyone else, but I have trouble doing much more than 6-8 hrs of driving at one time..... I will need a break.

If everyone wants to drive straight through... no problem... . I'll see ya'll there. Oo.

Matt... . are you able to pm me the directions?

Thanks Brian, I think you make a very good point. The more I think about it, the more I like the idea of leaving Thursday afternoon or early evening. I'm beginning to wonder where I got the idea that no one wanted to drive at night, but it is the best time to miss traffic. Is this what you're suggesting? Figgy seems to like the idea... I like the idea.

We can break up the trip by stopping in a motel or hitting a truck stop and sleeping in our trucks. Last year we did the truck stop thing. If we leave early enough on Thursday, we'd even have time left over to take a nap when we get to Muncie. I'm starting to like this idea better and better.

What do you all think?

MTE

I voted for "Leave Thursday, drive 1/2 way and camp out"..... here's why:

What we did last year worked well for the most part... . with the exception of the truck stop. As much as I like trucks, I could not catch even 5 minutes of sleep without hearing a class-8 truck accelerate out of the fuel pit. Some of the drivers were even nice enough to leave the Jake on.....

My real issue was JES - that SOB snores like a sonofagun. :D

I don't need a whole heck of a lot of sleep - so patronizing a hotel/motel would be a waste.

Finding a nice quiet spot to park would be killer.

Full-blown camping would require setup/strike time - time is at a premium.

I keep meaning to post the itinerary, and you've asked about three times. Thanks for being patient:

Starting from Norfolk, MA or thereabouts... ... .

Take I 90 West (Massachusetts Turnpike)

Take I 84 West

Take left Ramp to I 81 South

Take I 80 West

Straight on I 76 West

Take I 71

Take I 270 West (Outerbelt)

Take I 70 West (West Freeway)

Take Ramp and Bear right on US 35 North

Turn left on East McGalliard Road

Proceed ahead as name changes to West McGalliard Road

Turn left on North Everett Road

Turn right on West Bethel Avenue

Turn left on N. Everbrook Lane

End at Lees Inn, 3302 N Everbrook Ln 901. 4 13:32

I got a kick out of how we had to go through "Economy, IN" to get to Muncie. I think that is a bit of a misnomer, as I didn't see any signs of anything going on in that town.

I'm not saying that is a bad thing - heck I'd love to live out in the middle of nowhere. Plenty of room to have my own sledpulling track and dragstrip.....
