My EGT's go to about 1200 deg when pulling the 5th wheel up a good grade. I'm leaving Wed. and know of one hill about 2 miles long. How long is it safe to run this temp? Thanks.

1200 isnt a real bad temp, it probably will make your coolant temps rise, so keep an eye on that. 1300 would be a temp I wouldnt run at for more than 30secs - 1 min...

As long as you have good boost feeding the engine, the temps shouldnt be a problem... I may be wrong, someone else may chime in here. .

good luck

I pulled several hills this summer on a long trip to Nebraska and the egt was constantly up in the 1200* range with no apparent damage. I really dont like it there but I have read here on the forum that it is acceptable. When it gets close to 1300*, I get out of OD or unlock the TC to get the rpm up.

Would like to find a way to use the pyro to operate the OD automatically when egt gets out of hand.

Howard,

If you can figure out a way to sense the pyro without affecting the value, let me know. I am interested in building an automatic safety switch too.

I would never run sustained over 1200F because you are pushing the limits of safety and it will give you a little margin incase your pyro isn't exactly right. I have read of two cases on TDR in recent years of engine meltdowns under 1250F indicated.

Another thing is I don't think the 12v has quite as much piston cooling as the 24V, at least the HO, so you can't really compare a 12v to them in terms of safe sustained max EGT.

I did pull Vantage hill (longest continuous grade in North America) with 11,000 lbs and kept the pyro right on 1200 the whole way.

I'd say 1200*F is fairly safe also. All of the specs on our engines (12 valve or 24 valve) are at 1100*F EGT (if I'm not mistaken) so that would tell me, again if I'm right, that 1100 is optimal running temp. What's another 100*F?

jkh, how long at 1200*? If the pyro is good (you can tell after years of driving w/them) I would say all day every day.

Thanks guys. I will try to keep it below if I can. I will be following a Chevy6. 3 That is my problem. He slows way down on hills,If I can run 65-70 mph I don't have a problem but he can't ,so I may just have to pass him to keep my speed up and show him how a REAL truck should run!

Kinda think that the soot on top of the piston acts like a insulator. Plenty of guys tell me that they have run 1200 for miles on end. When you start running in the 1300's degrees you start cooking pistons.

Me I don't totally trust my pyro. I will run a sustained max temp around 1100 to 1150.
