amsoil engine oil?

Here is the question.



How long do I have to wait before I can start using Amsoil in my 2007??



I want to use it everywhere engine, transmission, transfer case, front and rear diffs.



All input is appreciated.



Also what are your experiences with the bypass filter systems?? Are they worth it and do they work well??

Q. I heard that new cars require a break in period with petroleum before you switch them to synthetic. How long should this break in period be?



A. AMSOIL Synthetic Motor Oil can be used during break-in trouble free. In fact, vehicles such as Dodge Viper and Chevrolet Corvette come factory filled with synthetic oil.



Since most new vehicles come filled with petroleum oil, it only makes good sense to change to AMSOIL at the first scheduled oil change interval. New engine components generate high levels of wear metals and can contain contaminants from assembly. By allowing the engine to operate with the petroleum oil until the first oil/filter change interval, the wear metals and contaminants are removed prior to installing AMSOIL.
 
How long do you expect to keep your truck? If conventional engine oil is good enough for Cummins to stand behind thier engines for 100,000 miles do you need more. We all have this notion that we will drive our Dodge Cummins for 500,000 miles how many of us will ever see 200,000 miles. I do not dispute that synthetic is a better oil, but at what cost? If you pay nearly 2x for the oil and still change it within reccomended intervals you have gained nothing, just spent some hard earned money on a warm fuzzy feeling. For me my trucks get changed at 7500 miles with a good diesel rated 15W40 and my old truck is still perking along just fine well over 200,000 miles.

I have never had a diesel engine go down due to oil breakdown or failure. This is only the humble opinion of a old Diesel Mechanic-tractor puller so take it easy on me.
 
Cummins technical said at least TWO oil changes on DINO before synthetic. I JUST called couple days ago and asked. So thats between 15 and 20k

I agree with Gonzo 1066 in that you have to consider the economics of it all, after all you did buy a CTD in the first place. If you were not going to want to keep it a long time, or put alot of miles on it, perhaps it would make sence to save the money and stay with a gasser.

I switched to Amsoil at about 15,000, now I have 300,000 on it.

You also asked about the by-pass filter, I beleive if you spend your money on better oil, you should get your money out of it by using it for its full life span, the by-pass filter system will allow you to do that, and both products ( oil & filters) will protect your investment in the engine. ( I like the Fritz by pass system )

I have been using an oil analysis, and have been able to get away with changing my oil at about 50,000 mile intervals, with filter changes in between.

I know I sound like an ad for Amsoil, but this is truly my experiance.

With oil changes about every 10 months, and little waste oil to deal with, I wouldn't use dino oil if it were given to me.

I suggest you educate yourself ( which you are doing) and decide for yourself.

Last thought... I find it interesting that Cummins does not recommend synthetics during break in, that suggests to me that they realise synthetic oil will reduce friction to much during that period and not allow components such as the rings to seat properly, based on that, when break in is finished, why would you not want to use the product (s) that will protect the best.

Pick a brand and go with it !

Comparing Vipers,Vettes etc. that come from the factory with synthetic is comparing apples to oranges. Differant types of rings,metals and bore finish etc. I waited to 18k to change mine over to Amsoil. 3k first oil change,8k second,13k third and at 18k went to Amsoil 15w40. Until the Amsoil 15w40 I used dealer coupons($54. 95) and let them service it with Mopar 15w40 and Mopar filter etc.

After a LONG hiatus from Dodge/Cummins, I have returned to the fold. Gonzo makes a good point. I know we all say "i'm going to drive it until the wheels fall off", but then the next, newest, neatest, coolest thing comes along or the deals are sweet or we get the "door ding" we just can't get over and we start thinking how nice it would be to have a new truck. Traded my F350 CC, LB , 4WD Lariat 7. 3 Powerstroke (98K and the wheels hadn't fallen off yet) for my new Cummins because I wanted an '06 before the "choking" begins in '07. I like the feeling of having Amsoil in my vehicle, but it IS expensive. Probably makes more sense to do the transmission and gears than it does for the motor although I will probably change over at 10K. It's good to be back... ... truck seems totally different from my 03 Ram. 800 miles and so far... . so good... ..... although alot of the posts here still scare :--) the %^&*#@#$$ out of me!!!

Out of the 10K miles on my truck, around 6K of them has been towing 11,000 lbs . I would not fear putting synthetic in mine. In fact I will switch over in the early spring before towing season starts again. My 98 did a lot more miles empty, I think it took more towards the 20,000 miles to break in.
