I just got my truck and I am starting to be afriad to tow my Vette road racing to different states:eek: I would hate to get stuck. Any good news out there? Injection pump & lift pump life seems to be horrible. I realize usually that just bad gets reported. Guess I need at least a fuel pressure gauge. Thanks! I had a 80 1 ton diesel chevy that went 90 then an injection pump then the truck went over 200,000 miles. I had a 89 Ford super duty that never started right, always had to crank and recycle to start. Five weeks in four different dealerships and nobody ever fixed it.

The situatuion is not good with the lift pumps, and the guys that bomb and loose a lift pump and don't know seem to take out an injection pump. There have been some that were stock and lost an inj pump, but most are bombed. It could be a lot worse though. I am at about 90K miles and (knock on wood) still have my ORIGINAL lift pump on the truck in good working order. There are a lot of OEM lift pumps working well for each failure you hear even though the fuel feed system in our trucks is flawed. The injection pump is a tough critter too, Steve StLaurent and HVAC are on their original pumps, I believe that CUMMINSTRKN is too. Relax, get a fuel pressure guage, maybe add a pusher pump and drive happily. HTH

My Dad has 70K on his origional lift pump and it still gives him 13 psi at idle and 10 under normal conditions... he does not do WOT runs.

I moved my lift pump to the rear of the truck and added diff fuel lines. I did this because I am very BOMBed and wanted to be proactive, not reactive.

My truck had real bad stumble, actually lost all power and had to coast over the the shoulder. This was at 2200 miles with the EZ box. I didn't have a FP gauge then, but when it was checked I was seeing around 6 psi's at idle ( if I recall correctly). Like the others stated, get a fuel pressure gauge and don't worry about the trips. By watching ypur psi's, you will know when it's going south and time for a replacement. Seems that most of the lift pumps don't just quit, they die slow, showing lower psi's then what you had as a baseline and will sometimes show sporadic readings.

LIFT PUMP "LUBRICATE"

I'M WONDERING IF ANY OF YOU HAVING LIFT PUMP PROBLEMS ARE USING A FUEL LUBRICANT. STANADYNE MAKES AN EXCELLENT YEAR ROUND LUBRICANT. CENTRAL MOTIVE POWER IN DENVER, CO RECOMENDS THIS PRODUCT, TO SAVE YOUR PUMPS. HIS MOTTO IS 'PAY ME A LITTLE NOW, OR A LOT LATER. REMEMBER THE FUEL YOU ARE USING NOW IS MUCH DRIER THAN BEFORE '93. Lub

I don't think the lift pump failures are anything to do with low lubricity fuel. It seems to be the electric motor that dies, from what I've read, and that is sealed and not lubed by fuel.

Lift pumps are the biggest problem. Luckily they are an easy fix. I would highly recommend a fuel pressure gauge. Worth its weight in gold.

On my 2001, lift pump failed at 30k miles. This was pre-injectors or fueling box. Dealer fixed under warrantee, no questions asked.

Since bombing, no issues.

TBOB, my truck has had Stanadyne PF in the tank since day one. I think the problem is a mediocre pump in a bad location. Just my opinion, mind you.

fuel lproblems

Diesel Dog,

As you can see in my signature I have the same truck without the training wheels. My lift pump went south at 10,000 miles. Fortunely I had a fp gauge. One day the gauge indicated 14 psi at idle, the next day it indicated 3 psi at idle.

On Sat I was down to Advanced Diesel Technology, just hanging around, BSing, Andy was putting gauges on a truck exactly like mine. But not a fp gauge. After completion, he attached his mechanical fp gauge to the truck. ZERO at idle. That guy is headed to the dealer for a new lift pump.

Sorry for being so winded but it shows that a FUEL PRESSURE gauge is one of the most important items on a Cummins RAM. :D ;)

It has been scientifically proven that these 24V lift pumps last anywhere from 1 mile to 1,000,000 miles... .  LOL... .

Seriously... nobody can tell you if or when your going to have a problem with your lift pump... . so... . install a fuel pressure gauge, post filter, and stop worrying about it... :D :D :D

Made it 20k on the original lift pump. This was before any bombing, and even before gauges. I started noticing a different noise coming from the pump when it was priming. Sounded really sick, and would sort of surge. I complained to the dealer, and he said "It is supposed to make noise". I checked him for a pulse, and explained to him that it was not right, and to check it out. They replaced it no questions asked. I now have 33K plus on the replacement pump, and a JVD box is about the only real mod I have done, and have had no problems. I have about 11. 5 psi at idle, around 10 psi at 70mph on flat ground and it drops to around 3 or 4 at WOT.

Lift Pump

Well I changed my lift pump pre maturely I think,I was only getting 10 psi @ idle and it went down to about 4 @ WOT.

But it ran great, but I changed it anyway and added a fuel pressure gauge, and it is pegging the needle @ idle, other than that I have 95000 miles on my 2000 all heavy towing miles,so I would just sit back and relax and enjoy your truck.

Id get that fuel pressure gauge right away. Id go with Genos Garage, they will fix you right up.

And if you want get an extra lift pump and tuck it away in your truck, just in case:)

PS. I use Marvel Mystery oil with every tank ,I sweer by it:D

Over 55k on factory lift pump and I pull 18,640 lb all the time. I do have a pusher pump that i will install when the weather will allow.

17K

Lift pump heading south, pressure has been gradually dropping over the past several weeks. Hope to install the pusher pump this weekend before the lift pump finally craps out.
