The way you drive - town vs highway miles - along with mods done, make all the difference in the world on oil color vs miles.

My '02 *used* to stay nice and clean for many thousands of miles, aided greatly by my Frantz bypass filter. BUT, several more mods, and moving to this area with lots shorter drives changed all that - now the oil is visibly darker at far less miles, but the good news is that oil analysis still shows an extremely high level of purity and low wear metals, regardless of how dark it appears.

I think diesel engines having black oil is no big thing really, it just gives some of us bragging rights cause ours stays so clean, but don't really mean nothing, except that someone changed the oil every 3000 miles instead of what the book says. My dearly loved 3406B Cat 425hp turned it black when you started it, but at a million miles it was still going strong!

.
After about 5,000 miles, when new the oil would start to get black, now it gets black at about 2,000 I still use about a quart between changes at 7 to 8 thousands. I guess when it gets black after 1,000 I need a new motor Stormy

my 95 and the 96 i just sold.....

both of them i change oil around 8 thousand miles. the reason is, the oil did not get dirty until atleast 5 thousand. both stock though.
