ever since I bought my truck new it's had to crank over 1 to 2 second's before it fire's ! is this due to cali. emmission's or what?

long story behind this from the retired cummins 12v specialist. but, if you crack the fuel pedal a bit while cranking, it makes a HUGE difference in the amount of time to fire..... like turn key and BANG! good luck.

Ive found that when you lower the idle speed,or its set on the low side, they take longer the start too. I lowered mine (my 96)by 100RPM's,that little bit made it take another full second or so to fire, before that you bumped the key and it was running, after that it had to turn over a few times.

What the others said about idle speed. :) I have worked on two other rigs that cranked too long so I bumped the idle speed up on them and solved the problem.

Thank you guy's

I will try the idle ajust... a buddy of mine has a 94 and you can't bump the starter without it fireing up!

I've put Piers' GSK on a lot of trucks and the vast majority of them I never had to touch the idle after the install.

The owners all say that their trucks start easier after the GSK... I tend to agree.

Just had the dreded 'bucking' solved with the new pump linkage kit. :) The idle is higher now & has resulted in JConley said, just bump & it starts. :D Lot's faster than before.

The screw is kinda hard to see... . but do this:

1) With the engine off... . have a cute gal sit in the cab - just tell her to hold the throttle to the floor while you are making a vital adjustment to your fuel injection pump. She'll think you are a genious... and that you trust her to help you with this important mission. :-laf

2) Literally lay on top of your hopefully lukewarm engine so that your face is near the back of the injection pump - with the cute gal holding the pedal to the metal, you will be able to see how the linkage has a little stop which consists of a screw with a 10mm hex head on it, and a 10mm locknut. (**all you need is two 10mm wrenches, but take out all kinds of other tools to make yourself look important!!... vernier calipers are good for this... **) Adjust it out for higher idle speed... . and the opposite for lower idle speed. You won't have to move it much... . probably about a 1/4 turn, if that... . Have the cute gal move the throttle from idle to full throttle if you can't figure out where the screw is... . it will be obvious once you see how it all works, however.

3) Be careful when you dismount from the engine bay - that hood latch has a nasty habit of hitting folks in a not so pleasant area.

4) Make sure all tools (that includes any human appendages) are removed from the engine bay... . and tell the cute gal to get her foot out of the throttle and give it a crank.

5) Squint your eyes and make yourself look important by checking the tachometer and other gauges, go out to the engine and look at that a little too... and say things like: "Hrmmm... . okay... that looks about right. Now rev up the engine a little for me. Okay... let it idle now. Hrmmm... . shut it down please... thank you. "

6) The cute gal should by now be blinded by your mechanical abilites and you'll look like a hero!

7) Repeat steps 1-5 until you get it right... . but keep in mind... . even if it takes several attempts, you can just say that it's a very precise adjustment.

8) Thank the cute gal for her help... . and hope that this proceedure may have helped to 'break the ice' and you may be soon dating her!

Matt I never tried it that way, is there enough room to stare at the gal though the gap at the bottom of the up raised hood?

Might make it easier to draw the job out so it seems more complicated. I personally like doing the job from the underneath so I can take a nap while everyone thinks I'm hard at work.

So is it really not that hard to adjust the idle?

I saw a picture somewhere and it made it look near immpossible. I finally found a shop in the area that will advance my timing so I was planning on letting him do my idle as well.

But Matt makes it sound simple. Just how hard is this?

Idle adjustment is really easy... .

You'll spend more time trying to get your hand down in there than actually doing the work (no puns intended... . haha).

Actually you can see right through the gap inbetween the hood/cowl and look right through the cab and back window out towards the rear of the truck... . giving you the ability to be all stealthy when scoping out a fine lookin' lady.

And remember... . it's not always bad to get caught, a lot of gals are flattered..... just don't look at her like a cold beer or a steak - with drool on yer mouth or anything like that.

Matt -->spends WAY too much time workin' on diesels and scopin' out the ladies.
