how long to leave original oil in new truck?

I read that Cummins does not use additives or break in oil, so I changed at 1500 miles. now a member says I sould have left it in longer. Anyone know which is correct?
 
I changed mine at 2000 then again at 6000. My girlfriend has followed the same regime with no problems. I switched to synthetic (Amsoil) at 12000 and now I change it every 7500. The change to synthetic might have been a little early by some people but I was going on a 5000 mile road trip to CO at that time.



I'll be looking at a dual bypass from amsoil & CPFF when I get the chance. :cool:
 
oil change

i was a little lazy, and didn't get my first change done until 1800 miles. :D i am going to agree with the early changers. i've always figured that there will be more wear particles and so forth early on, so get 'em out with new oil fairly early. i'm still trying to change every 3000 miles. I LIKE THE SMELL OF NEW ROSMELLA!!:D
 
I guess I waited longer than everyone else. The first change to Delo 400 was at 2000 miles; the next change was at 5000. :rolleyes: May Clessie Cummins forgive me! :{ ;)

1st done at 3000, 2nd done at 6000, from there I do 8000mile oil change intervals using Delo (63k now). I don't see the reason to change it sooner, after all it's a diesel not a gas pig.
 
Did mine at 1000 and will do it at 4000 then 9000 then 14000. May vary depending on conditions. :--) I would like to get it analyzed at 4000 dump

I guess I started this. When I bought mine I called Cummins and asked. They told me that they do a engine run-up and change the oil before they ship them to DC. The particles that end up in the oil after that are small and actully help to smooth things out. According the the tech that I talked to it helps with break-in. It will not hurt it if you change it sooner as you did. Give Cummins a call at 1-800-343-7357. They are great to talk to.
 
If memory serves me right a long time (1yr??) ago this subject came up and somebody made mention Cummins has service bulletin about this and basically it said what BatMan01 said about leaving the oil in for awhile to help aid break-in. You may be able to find this somewhere on Cummins website, or give them a call. You can email -- email address removed --

If I were to buy a new one off the lot today,

I would probably drive it about 500 miles then change the factory oil (this is me).

But I wouldnt feel bad about leaving it in for 3000 miles.

At no time is it "too early" to change the factory oil.
 
Ok laugh at me call me a dummy but I have 5500 on my truck bought it new and still is original oil. I did a science fair project on oils and additives and their viscosities and breakdowns back in High School about 6-8 years ago. I had a gasoline engine Ford before this it was a 1997 and I ran Amsoil (my dad is a dealer) and changed the oil every 25000 miles and the filter at 3500. It had 130000 when I sodl it and it ran great. My dad and grandpa has changed their oil the same in everything they own. The both have many toys as they own their own business. THe put a lot or highway miles on their vehicles and the oil works great(Amsoil). I will probabaly change mine at 6000 or 8000 I haven't decided the dealer told me to wait un til 8000 and my dad has a couple friends that run diesel mechanic shops they said the same. I will switch to Amsoil and run it at long intervals but filter it well. Oil will turn black but last a long time if you filter it. There is an Amsoil dealer on here with a 138000 on his diesel and only changed the oil once at 8000. It is hard to convince yourself to do but it works great. THis was not an AMsoil sponsored ad I promise. I am stepping down off the box now. LOL
 
Today's modern oils are usually good for 20,000 miles with few exceptions - and that's not even talking about synthetics! The important piece of info is that you need to run your truck at operating temperature OFTEN to extend your oil this far.



If you're an occasional driver, the condensation that forms in the engine when it's cold will mix with the oil, and over time create acids and allow for rust and/or corrosion to form. The best course of action to prevent this is to change your oil at reasonable (4000-8000 miles) intervals.



What you can NOT skimp on is changing the filter! Regardless of how often you want to leave your oil in, your filter should be changed at the factory recommended interval of 7500 miles, or more often. The filter is made out of paper/cellulose, and as it gets old, it decays and begins to fall apart. If you get filter paper pieces stuck in your oil passages/bearings, you're going to have serious problems with engine longevity.





Me? I change my oil when it gets so black I can't see through it. *grin* About 5000-7500 miles for me, or every 4-6 months.

Cummins Never changes the oil in Test Cell

If I heard right at the 99 rally in Columbus (CMEP), when Cummins runs B engines in a test cell to simulate a 100,000 mile run or more they NEVER change the oil once.



I don't think the factory changes the original oil installed. They are all test run at CMEP to check for leaks but I don't call they are drained. At the time they already were going through 1400 gallons every 24 hours.



I would not worry about leave the factory fill (Valvoine Premium Blue 15W40) in for 4 to 6K unless it takes 6 months and you get your new truck in Dec in the Cold Country.
