New CTD Owner!

I was wondering how long should I leave the truck running to let the turbo cool off? I usually try to wait at least a couple of minutes, but am not sure if that is enough or if it really matters. I have always let my trucks warm up long enough (just ask my neighbors) , and if I am just running in somewhere I will try to leave it running if I can. I am probably just trying to baby it to much, but if the CTD ain't running I ain't working. Thanks for the help.

Pyro?

I let my engine cool to 400 or lower on the Pyrometer. Takes about 1minute no more than two unless I've been hitting it real hard and even then never more than 3 min. :{ :)

My pyrometer is post-turbo, so I let mine cool to below 300.

Unless I've been running real hard, or it's over 100 outside, usually, by the time I get to the place to park, it's down.

I've noticed that if I drop to 2nd gear (auto) and use engine braking from 55mph down, by the time I get stopped (if I don't brake), it's ALWAYS well down, unless I was pulling really hard right up to that point, at 700 or above.

Thanks for the suggestions. :) I am working on getting some gauges right now. I am still practicing in the mirror "Honey, it wasn't that expensive" but she is pretty understanding. For right now I will let it idle for a few minutes until I shut it off. Does anyone have anything good or bad to say about the Auto Meter Ultra Series of gauges pn#4344 egt #4304 boost 0-30 psi, and #435 transmission temp. Those are the ones that I am looking at. Power Wagon I have family in Longview, WA is that anywhere near you. (too lazy to look at a map) I am planning a trip up that away aroun the 4th of July.

On the boost gauge I went with a 50# in case I ever add a fueling box.

Style is an individual thing I have Westach duals to get more info.

I gauge what I call critical info; Boost, EGT, FP, transmission temp (auto), OP. If ANY of these values goes sky high or sky low there is a MAJOR problem.

Have fun!

Travis, I am running The A/M UltraLites for Boost and EGT. I LOVE them during the day, they are very readable and look classy. They SUCK at night. The halo-style lighting leaves a lot to be desired. You can read them, it's just that your eyes have to adjust a little bit because they are so dim. I have been thinking about taking the little colored covers off the bulbs to get more brightness.

IF I had it to do again, I would probably have gone with the ISSPRO EV gauges, or the SPA techniques. I went with the Autometers because the local shop had them (as well as the 60psi boost gauge). The SPAs are probably the most accurate you can buy, but you will pay $$$ for them.

EDIT: my Fuel pressure gauge is NOT autometer, but Hewitt from Enterprise Engine. It lights through the face, and is awesome under all circumstances. Love it!

Hey, that's my old truck

great to see you joined up here Travis. you can learn a ton from this place.

unless you are towing or come straight off the highway into the driveway ten feet and park it. it will be down around 325 before you shut it off. with the way you putt around :D i dont think you have anything to worry about. just put it in park let the idle recover and shut it down.

BTW those are 370HP injectors and you have 191CC delivery valves from TST in there too.

give me a shout and we'll get those guages in there for ya

Another tip that speeds cool down and will help keep mold and mildew from growing in your vents, smelling like a dead animal - turn off your A/C a mile or so before you park for the night.

I don't know if your truck came with one or not, but your manual should give you a chart of different driving situations and the cool down times that apply. I read the manual front to back twice when I got my truck brand new. It was pretty informative for me.

Enjoy your truck!

My shop is up hill from town and only a few hundred feet off the road. I run for parts all the time and can't sit there waiting for a full cool down to 300º. I shut down at 375º - 400º post turbo all the time. My house is also uphill from the main road. I recently rebuilt my turbo to fix a leaking turbine side piston ring and that thing was perfectly clean inside with no burned oil or anything. I personally think 300º is a stretch. I know it's nice if you have all day to wait (can take a long time in the summer after a hill) for 300º post turbo but I don't think a little more then that hurts a thing.
