Is 118 decibels loud enough to wake up that driver that changes lanes into my "invisible" 3500?

I found a horn in a industial supply catalog... 12 VDC, 118 decibels and is described as "118 dB @ one meter tone". It's 304 stainless and is 16" long by 4" X 4"... $85. What is one meter tone? Deep or squeek?

I really wanna see some urine dripping from those rice burners!

Thanks bros

Most decibel readings will be given at "10 feet" or "100 feet". that is the normal standard of measurment for sound readings. So if a horn says it is 130db at 100 feet, it is ALOT louder if it is measured at 10 feet!. You should try and look for the highest number at 100 feet. That is a true idea of just how loud your horns are. For example:
Horn "A" 135db at 100 feet
Horn "B" 145db at 10 feet
Even though horn "B" seems like it is louder because you see 145 db, the truth is horn "A" is louder since the reading was taken 90 feet farther away. Read the fineprint when horn shopping, you will be much happier. Or just buy Hadleys no matter what and you will be happy!

If you want a refference idea,
Most Air Raid sirens are between 100-115db at 100Feet. OR 130-145db at 1 meter
Most train horns are between 110-115db at 100feet OR 140-145db at 1 meter
A 1 meter db rating sounds more immpressive then it really is as you can see. so a horn for your truck that approaches these ratings is pretty F***ing loud.

110 to 118 db is about what most stock horns run. My 26 inch Hadley is rated at 135db when you run 120 psi thru it. Even when the air tank runs down to 90 psi it is way louder than stock. I have a pix of it in the air horn mounting thread in this forum. Paid about $59 for it from JC Whitney about 15 years ago. Still works perfectly.

You do not need a horn, just straight pipe the truck and get right along side and blast him with a 2500 rpm downshift. #ad
WAY OVER 120 db

The evacuation horn we have were I work is rated at 100db at six miles. It is the loudest thing I have ever heard. You have to wear hearing protection when it goes off or you are deaf for hours. Too bad it would not fit in the back of the truck

I am guessing your exxagerating a bit on the 100db at 6 miles. That would come out to be approximatley 3,000db at 100 feet. Which is about twice as loud as the space shuttle taking off. No hearing protection in the world could protect you from that. At that volume no human could survive, it would be fatal. But it would be a nice idea to get peole out of your way. You could just vaporise them. The loudest air raid siren ever built was only 148db at 100ft. And that could be heard for about 3-5 miles depending on terrain and wind. But at that distance it would only be around 70-80db.
(by the way, in case you are wondering why i have so much info on such a bizzare topic, i used to work for a company that desinged and insatlled community warning systems for the Military and Municipalities)
