Boy, what is all these fuel sending problems in this year???? How can you tell if they are bad or not???? Also where exactly are they located???? THANKS

RedNut, I don't think it's just the '98 trucks with the fuel sender problem, I'm pretty sure several other years are having the same problems. The way you can tell you are having troubles is that your fuel gauge will act up. Mine drops to empy and chimes all the time and then goes back up after a bit. the sender is located in the fuel tank.

Mine's a 2500. First and only serious pickup I've ever owned (only SUV's up til now). Love it so far. It's taken a while to get used to the diesel. I bought it used last July and it appears from what I've read here since then it is the pinnacle of performance, simplicity and reliability of the line so far. Got lucky. My only complaint is I wish I got a little better mileage.

Got mine Nov. 1997 55,000 miles

Bought new in 3/98 - GREAT truck. . Now 72k miles later, still a great truck. Learned very quickly that dealer svc. was a joke & have been doing my own maint. & mods ever since. NO problems except the (sounds like) normal fuel sender and NV241 seals - still on the original brake pads & shoes! Every time I hear some co-worker or friend proclaim how their Expedition/Suburban/whatever will tow anything, I have to laugh my head off - they just don't understand. Hope Dodge uses their heads and realizes that trucks don't need IFS or 4WD buttons on the dash - just a thumpin' Cummins engine, big Dana axles, and a 4WD lever in the floor...

I got my special ordered 98 the week after Thanksgiving in 97. I told the broker that I ordered it through that if I couldn't get a 12V I didn't want the truck! No problem except dowel pin under timing cover which was repaired under warranty. This truck now has 85K miles and it runs great with no oil usage and the truck is put together extremely well. No squeeks, very tight.

Let's see, manual, 68,000 miles (approx) odometer says 54K (36" tires!). Replaced, fromt timing seal, TC seal, pinion seal, both rear axle seals, front drive shaft CV and U joint, track bar, the power steering pump leaks now, and the drag link is going bad. I've blown a head gasket, replaced the oil cooler, and just changed my brake pads and shoes.
Performance mods= 370 injectors, 370 delivery valves, JRE #3 plate, BD governor spring kit (4200 RPM), 420cc's of delivered love juice, marine head gasket, ported/fully flowed head, copper seated valves, 60lb valve springs, McLeod dual disc clutch, twin turbos (this weekend), dual stage LP, SPA digital gauges and since the second day I owned her; two black smoke puffin'-hear me Cummin chrome stacks! I'm sure I am missing some mods, but this is close. As far as hp, don't know, don't care, just love the power!

I bought mine 1/98 asked the dealer if there were any major changes for the '99 he said no so went and got a really good deal. When I broght the truck in for the first service there were 24 valves on the lot. Boy was I pi**ed! I am over it now and after having the transmission rebuilt under warrantee at 24K and a few TSB's done I am very happy at 50K. I PLAN ON KEEPING THIS TRUCK FOREVER!

Since we are talking repairs, I had a cruise control servo replaced, 1 fuel sender, and 2 rear axle bearings replaced at the same time. Not bad for 73K miles #ad

Mine delivered Dec 97, very happy with my stock 12v, more power than I need. 60K + miles, great mpg. IMO, this B series is still the best engine out there. If it ain't broke, don't fix it! was my feeling while ensuring I get the 12v before the 1/1/98 deadline.

Like above, pinion seal, axle seal, and a useless tank sender that I've learned to live with.

I ordered mine in Oct. '97, late enough for a Quad Cab, early enough for a 12V. I didn't want to be a guinea pig for the ISB engine! Best truck I ever owned.

OK all you '98 12V owners, enough already! You are making me jealous!

STILL looking for a '98 2500 QC 5spd, 4X2, (12V of course) in Hawaii to test drive and buy (if good)

I just traded a 2000 mini van for my 98. 4 2500 quad cab short bed 12 valve 5 speed with 50k... . totally awesome truck... . getting ready to do some mild "bombing"..... this list is absolutley great... . talk about exponential learning curves!!

Yup, me too!:D Got mine Nov 27, '97, it was built 11/11/97. I had just heard that Jan '98 was the start of the 24V's and did not want to be a guinea pig.

So far, 81K miles, fuel sender went out, but I fixed it forever:D (see Dave Fritz's site), left rear axle seal was dripping, it's fixed now after the 3rd try (I think using RTV on the outer edge did it). Track bar died (big surprise there, huh?), and shocks too.

Warranty fixes were a rear pinion seal and steering shaft.

Ordered 8/12/97, acquired 10/18/97. Assembled in Saltillo. No complaints about fit and finish, even after 93K miles. S/N 120028.

Front shaft went out-of-round near 10K miles, replaced under warranty. Installed KYB shocks around 12K miles; replaced them on principle around 88K. Installed boost/EGT gauge around 10K miles. Front brakes disintegrated around 26K miles; dealer bought the calipers, I paid for new rotors, pads, etc. OEM tires wore out near 50K; put Yoko TY303 225/70-19. 5 on; still have about 1/2 the tread left. K&N air filter around 40K; hasn't needed cleaning yet. Silencer ring fell off a long time ago. Installed dual-remote bypass filter around 65K miles; still using that first load of Amsoil. One heater relay failed around 75K miles and caused slight damage; replaced both relays and the AFC boost tube. Installed 215HP injectors around 80K miles; they helped. Replaced the steering gear around 85K miles. L/R axle seal replaced around 85K miles. Switched to Amsoil lube in diffs and transmission around 90K miles; MPG went up about 4% to 18 or so. Installed JRE 4" exhaust turbo-back - the cat wandered off during this upgrade and hasn't returned yet; EGT dropped 100-200 degrees, MPG *may* have gone up a little as well. Replaced ball joints, front axle seals, L/F hub bearing at 92K miles. A/C has never worked very well. Replaced track bar at 45K miles, and again at 90K; hope the NAPA bar lasts longer than the OEM part.

Still runs like a raped ape on downers. It now climbs the 7% hill on I-64 at 75-80 MPH at 800-900

degree EGT. For my purposes, it's enough power. Maybe some day I'll add more. The leather inside is still in very good shape. The rubber floor mat is like new. And there seem to be a couple minor rattles and squeaks inside. Hmm. Spray-line the interior? The seating is among the most comfortable I've felt in any pickup.

I need to examine why the rear wheels/tires seem to be bent, causing premature wear. Need to adjust valves again and fix leaky valve-cover gasket(s). Need to get the thing re-timed. Need to spray-line the bed and film the windows (to help the lousy A/C). I may want to clear-coat the paint, even though it still looks pretty darn good.

Oh, and I still owe about $9K on it.

All in all, if I were in the market for another truck, I'd likely get one just like it.
