Hmmm, quite a few lift pumps running considerable miles. Could the dreaded lift pump tales be somewhat exagerated? My first lift pump went bad at about 85,000 miles and although I wish it could have lasted indefinitely, I don't see where a $200. part that fails at 85,000 miles reason enough to run out and spend thousands on a whole new fuel system.

I have a theory on the 02's and Vp44's.

I think underhood air flow design and engine compartment heat on the 02's changed enough that the Vp44 is not cooled adequately by the combination of fuel and air flow.

The drive in front end design is tighter and tighter engine compartment design which MIGHT lead to less and less free air flow around components.

DC knew they were going to CR and were pushing the 02 to the CR compartment design ahead of actually changing the VP44 to the CP3.

Just my theory,

Im a little confused. The 2002 is the old body style. What changed that would change the airflow so dramatically?

Im scared to even post on this cause i will probably go out tomorrow and find the truck wont start and the vp44 is fried :-laf but i just hit 100k and all is good with the vp. I went through 3 lift pumps in 25k miles, then put a carter 4601 back at the tank in a solo configuration with all free flowing lines and fittings and have had the same pump on there for the last 75K. This is of course because i keep a spare carter in the tool box. Now i know if i were to take the spare out of the truck my LP would probably die just a few miles from my house on the very next trip :-laf :-laf

What about the lack of the hood liner? Could the greater cyclic temperatures be the issue. Without the liner the VP would cool quicker, I guess the thing to know would be if the 02 VP's are all dying because of the electronics.

By the way I just broke 159,000 miles on my 01 the other day, I've had a Comp since 40-something thousand miles and injectors for quite a while too. I've put turkey fryer oil in the tank, used motor oil, kerosene and jet A I think it's called, basically kerosene cleared for aviation. I run an additive most of the time but not all the time, and when I bought the truck with 24 thousand on it the lift pump was dead and I don't know for how long. I pretty much abuse my truck by some standards, I like to run it up to 3000 rpm and then shift when getting on the highway, I don't really believe in lugging the engine because that ruins things so I run it like a generator... ... fast.

Sill on my original at estimated 90,000 with 20-30 on comp tapped

can't be sure with the numbers cause speedo is WAAAY off due to running 37s in place of factory 30s

I am at 44000 and still going, plow snow in the winter and pull a 4-horse goose neck horse trailer in the summer. I do watch the fuel level(above half) in the tank and run a conditioner. HAve been getting nervous and considering a fuel pressure gauge.

5 transfer pumps thats right 5  and 1 vp at only 55,000 on a 2002 3500 6 speed. I do tow a 7x14 enclosed trailer just about everyday, which I consider light work for this truck. My only mod is 4 inch exhaust and superchips for the last 20k. First 10k were great then went the 1st transfer pump, then the next, and so on and so forth...

Five years and 52,000 miles on original VP. Installed a Carter pusher pump about a year ago because pressure was varying down to 3 psi when cold. Now run 22 psi at idle and 16 WOT. So far so good, knock on wood.
