The first day of Dove season started Saturday and though I didn't bag many. The start of hunting seasons and the smell of burnt gunpowder turns me on!! :D

Had the opportunity to go out yesterday afternoon, but the thought of BBQ and beer by the pool somehow sounded better at the time than slogging around in a field in the Texas heat... :p

Count your blessings, no place here on LI for that.

About the best you can get is shotgun or bow for deer.

There are some places that are private and you go for some bread to hunt "bird shooting". But land open enough for upland hunting is getting hard to find.

I used to work with some folks in South Dakota. The stories I'd hear from them about Dove hunting. Bag the limit in short time, every day they'd go.

Didn't go. As a lot of you know most of the land in Texas is private with people leasing hunting hunting rights on this land. I paid 1500. 00 year before last to hunt deer and turkey. That is a 360 mile trip one way. Started hunting on wifey's parent's land last year and it is a lot cheaper. Now I can save for one of my dream hunts. I want to go to Canada or Alaska bear hunting. Well I guess I got carried away,I did go fill the deer feeders last weekend on our farm.

The first dove hunt here in Wisconsin was scheduled to open Saturday. The Wednesday before the same wacko's that tried to keep us from getting the season sued and got an injunction stopping the season "temporarily" until the legality of the season can be determined. So I bagged 0 doves. Having never hunted doves before I was really looking forward to a couple of relaxing days hunting. We can only hope that I will get to try dove hunting next year.

On the brighter side the early Canada goose season opened here today. One came close enough and is now in the fridge, so all has not been lost. Will be off work tomorrow too to hunt geese too. If you guys have not seen the effectiveness of 12 guage 3 1/2" high velocity steel shot it really is something to see. The high velocity stuff works, and works well. Good luck to all of you in the field this fall.

1/2 mile from my house, public land, 3 boxs of shells, killer time = 20 doves. Limit is 10 a day and thats what I bagged. Going out again soon. maybe tonight. :D

PS. I never claimed to be a great shot but its getting better.

That Wisconsin story is terrible. I could not see that happening here in Texas. Idaho either for that matter. I live in both states and the hunters are all strongly united.

Last year we would get our limit in less than an hour. It was very hot though. I have not been out this year. it rained alot over the last few days and my transmission is still being rebuilt. I hated to take the wifes Mercedes, actually she would have hated it.

Plenty of birds and plenty of places to hunt 'em.

Don~

Sounds like a war's going on around here from 9:00 am 'til dusk. Lot's of shooting but there's still plenty of birds (I think that's part of the sport). Dove hunting in the northeastern part of maryland has been tough lately with all the new neighbors from the city. Boy are they getting a rude awakening.

I don't hunt much any more - too many neighbors. When I was young - a few years back, all the neighbors where diary or cattle farmers. Now they're city folks who like the country view but dislike the customs which go along with it.

My son, neighbor, neighbor's boss, and I just experienced the best dove hunt around.

A certain Corporation owns about 200 acres just north of us. Every year about a month before dove season opens they begin "preparing" the land for a dove hunt.

Saturday morning, we all met for a warm up skeet shoot, BBQ chicken and pork tenderloin. That afternoon about 60 hunters scattered over the "prepared" hunting ground. Arkansas dove limit is 15. We got our limit. Two of my son's friends came over later and they got their limit also.

Will be cranking up the grill this weekend!

Well, I went out last night again and bagged 3 more. Looks like a good year around here. Cant wait to get out again saturday evening. :D :D

That makes 23 this week.
