How many firefighters are in the TDR?

East Coaster's

I have been a firefighter in Bremen for about 5 years. We have 2 engines, 1 tanker with a new one on the way, 1 mini engine, 1brush truck, 1 rescue-engine, 1 ladder, 2 squads, and a useless snowmobile since it never snows below route 70 :{

Some of the purchases I have seen almost coincide with the typical scenario: "Okay... we have $30k to spend or the State is gonna take it back. What cool stuff should we get?!" :D

Unfortunately, the above scenario is seldom the case. Far too many firefighters are out there everyday using substandard equipment. Even more departments are understaffed... . it's not a good situation.

I've been a volunteer for nearly a year now with the Elbert, CO department. We have one station with two tenders, two scats, two ambulances (BLS), one wildland truck, and one engine. We cover 186 sq mi with about 1000 residents and have about 100 calls per year.

Im not, but my dad was. 20 years with the Seattle FD. He was stationed downtown and fought most of the big fires in the 50's and 60's when there were no sprinklers. I still keep in touch with the "family".

Volunteer for 15 years, Central Crossing Fire District, Shell Knob, Mo. We are a 100% volunteer and dream for the luxury of fire hydrants.

PVFD is one station of five that cover Sublette County (4,883 square miles, all volunteers). Right now we have a 25,000 acre fire up in the forest (Fontenelle Fire, see Pinedale Wyoming, Pinedale Online for photos) Lots of smoke. Obviously I'm not up there. It's gonna be a long summer at this rate.

Great job but your body pays for it.

21 years in the fire service this year. I have also been teaching new firefighters for the last 10 or so. I tell every student that comes through one of my classes that the day you quit being scared is the day that you are going to get hurt.

The most scared I was wasn't actually in a fire, but rather during a storm related rescue. Had a bolt of lighting hit no more than a few feet from us while we were working on a patient. That was an intense moment.

The highest possiblity I see for firefighters getting hurt or life in danger is working on accident scenes on highways, streets and freeways. People are always looky loos and do not watch where they are going. The speed some people drive past or through a scene is crazy.

Im a paramedic here in Vegas, I know for a fact that flashing lights on the side of the road is a magnet to a car... . eventually it will draw someone to hit the back of the ambulance... .

Paid extra help firefighter here. Still in the game and learning something new everyday.
