Friends,
I'm on the edge of deciding to install an EGT gauge and pyro probe in the exhaust manifold on my 2017 Ram 5500. This is the first truck I haven't installed one in and had initially decided not to.

I thought I'd throw it out there to y'all for opinions and/or tips on it. Still not sure I'm going to do it, because this looks to be really difficult to drill and tap the exhaust manifold and I'm not 100% sure I need it.

Anyway, thanks in advance for your input.

Cheers,

Ron

I installed two , One just above the Turbo, the other in the #2 exhaust port. I switch between ( IQ) TCPL 1&2, You can also get the info form the Thermo-sensor in the downpipe VIA OBD II.

I can view two at a time , and just switch them around....Some say you don't need em, I do used them and compare how much heat the turbo's taking, Yes Stock don't need'em , this truck not stock......

I used two pyros on my 02, one pre and one post turbo and two fuel pressure gauges, one pre and one post fuel filter. Cool.

Isn't the first factory EGT probe a few inches down from the turbo?

Thanks Ron

On my 2013, the first stock egt probe is just before the first trap, about a foot downstream from the elbow. I use the Edge Insight to monitor egt, fan speed, rail pressure, etc. I use egt primarily for shut down, and can approximate turbo temp enough with that probe. Fueling is stock, so I am not trying to prevent a melt down.

Joe,

Great info. I ordered Edge Insight last night. What are you postulating temp drop, 150 to 300 degrees? Like TCDiesel?

I'm adding 60HP with Stealth Module.

Thanks. Ron

The engineer in me is speaking up here, the higher the Delta T across the turbo means that more power is being extracted from the exhaust gas flow, hence more boost created. I guess my thinking is that if I put the Pyro on my new to me truck, I will put the sensor on the input side of the turbo and will get TIT (turbine inlet temp)
gtwitch in wyoming.

GTwitch,

Yes sir, I agree. I also purchased the Edge combo cable/EGT pyro, but I pretty much dread doing it due to the difficulty of getting to it and doing the install properly. Genos has a how to on 4th Gen gauges and show drilling/ tapping to the right of center of the exhaust manifold to avoid dropping metal shavings into the turbo. I'm going to study it, I have about 10 or more weeks down from surgery, so plenty of time to plan. I'm thinking about loosening the turbo bolts, slide in thin plastic sheet, tightening it, drilling tapping center, using magnet and vacuum cleaner to remove metal filings, then, putting back to normal. My thinking is centered will get better (more accurate) number on exhaust temps. I like throwing this out there and see the comments back. I depended lots on engineers in my career, and still appreciate the opportunity to leverage their expertise.

Bottom Line: It would be nice to determine to optimal location for the pyro pre-turbo installation.

Thanks a bunch!

Ron

I remember the pre vs post turbo debates raging heavily when I bought my old '05. I ended up drilling/tapping the manifold. Worked great and reacted quickly.

Yes Sir! I remember those "discussions" well. On my 02, I literally drove by the EGT gauge when towing. I remember running temps (EGT, coolant, oil) just below max. I took a transmission cooler and plumbed my Amsoil bypass filter through it. Amazing how much cooling the engine oil helped keep coolant temps down too. I believe my 02 was my favorite truck and my last manual.

I tapped the manifold on my 09 4500; broke off the tap in it. My BIL had a great little specialty tool for backing out broken taps. My 17 has way more in the way besides the EGR cooler. But, part of the make up of us type As is the drive to overcome obstacles. I likely will.

Thanks,

Ron
